Hannah Cooper
Software Engineer at Babylon Health
There are so many great resources online now - find a free course or resources and just start building something. It's best just to try and play around with coding and have some fun with it. (Hacker rank, code academy, free code camp, https://www.codefirstgirls.org.uk/) Don't be intimidated - no one knows everything in tech as it's such a huge field.
About Hannah...
Who am I?
"I use my Coordinator personality as I need to be able to communicate well with the team, our users and engineers on other teams and management to get the best product built to solve problems. Influencer enables me to explain ideas and problems and work well with a team. Manager is great for planning projects and making sure everything works out as it should."
What do I do?
"I am a Software Engineer. I write code to build software for a health care company. I'm particularly focused on our testing and internal tools, making sure the software we build is the best it can be and making it easier for our engineers to build things well and efficiently. The people I work with are really clever people, but everyone is also really friendly and keen to teach you new things. I like making a difference: our aim is to provide accessible and affordable healthcare to everyone on earth and the technology we build is a big part of that mission. I love the challenge as there's always something new to learn and a new problem to solve. I've already moved team to learn some new skills and there are opportunities to become a senior engineer or a technical team lead. "
How did I get here?
"I had a couple of great Maths teachers at school who gave me a love of problem solving and made me believe I was good enough to study it further. Because of them, I took Maths, Further Maths (and History) at A Level and went on to complete a Masters in Mathematics."
The life I live
"I love Climbing and bouldering - I climb 2/3 times a week and go abroad on climbing holidays with friends. Other than that salsa dancing, dinners with friends and going to the theatre ."
My typical day
"I usually start with a team stand-up meeting, where we discuss what we're all working on and any help we need. The rest of the day is mostly spent writing code, writing tests and reviewing others’ code. Sometimes we'll have meetings to work as a team to design new systems or features and plan work, well will also meet with managers and our users to check we are building and prioritising what is needed."
My qualifications
"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels) Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) A level Maths A A level Further Maths A A level History A Post-graduate degree (MSc, MA, etc.) MSci Mathematics "
