About Abigail...

Who am I?

"I love knowing how things work... where does your water come from? How did that get there? Where does the power for my TV come from? My answer for everything is ‘Let's google it’! I am inquisitive and love problem solving. If someone moans about something, lets find a way to make it better. So your car doesn’t work.. lets fault find and try and work out why it doesn’t work. "

What do I do?

"My job role is the operations engineer I mainly review the way we do things. Updating checksheets, producing project scopes, reviewing procedures, ensure compliance with safety. I carry out isolations on the plant to ensure safety from the system. I can operate the plant such as bringing it online and shutting it down. I outline what the priorities of the plant are. "

How did I get here?

"I got my GCSE’s and went onto 6th form where I did one year of drama and 2 years of product design and P.E studies before starting an apprenticeship at the age of 18. I loved product design at school and my teacher told me about engineering so I did a year of this at 6th form and I pleaded with my 6th form tutor to let me go and do 2 weeks work experience at Stanlow Oil Refinery to see what an engineering company does. This is what really inspired me and the mound of opportunities that engineering creates. There was a design office, mechanical, chemical, electrical, instrumentation, management, testing and so much more I was able to see! This gave me the knowledge to apply for apprenticeships and have an understanding of what I really enjoyed which was the main thing. I was offered a place with Stanlow Oil Refinery (ESSAR) to start my apprenticeship with the training provider TTE. In my first year at this college I learn’t all the different types of engineering and in my 2nd year I got to choose which one I wanted to do. I chose operations which is what I am doing today."

The life I live

"I have played football all my life until I suffered a knee injury but hoping to play casually. I am going to learn french and hopefully get back into the violin which I used to play in school. I love learning anything new and I have ran a marathon! "

My typical day

"The day starts with the morning meeting to review what happened on the plant last night and whether we need to do any emergency work today to get it back up and running. I might need to start fault finding where I will look through the alarm list and look at trends to see what has happened. Then we can hand over to the maintenance team to fix the issue. After that I might be involved in coming up with a solution to stop it from happening again. I will plan for emergency exercises and organise the training for the operations team. I might need to jump on the panel to relieve someone where I will need to react to what electricity national grid are wanting and adjust the plant to match it. I might need to nip out onto sight to isolate a piece of equipment for the maintenance team to work on. I will liaise with the engineers to see what they are working on an if I can help. I will gather some quotes for projects to be completed. I will Review procedures. "
