Jackie Butterfield

Sales Manager at Bonds Heavy Castings

Be fearless, but be yourself. Working in a technical sales role in what is still a male dominated industry sector is tough, but rewarding. You need to be true to yourself and not change to fit in with the boys.

About Jackie...

Who am I?

"I have to manage and ‘Coach’ team members, ‘Coordinate’ my activities and those of the team and I have to ‘Influence’ customers to buy products. So my personalities are accurate. "

What do I do?

"I am a Sales Manager for a foundry that produces large steel castings for a variety of industries. I handle enquiries from customers, work out their requirements and put together a price for them. I then produce a quotation document, send it to the customer and follow up to try and get them to buy the product. Once they place an order, I have to communicate with them regularly to give them updates on their order and let them know if there are any problems. I also have to deal with customer complaints if the product does not meet their requirements. The technical challenge of looking at a customer's enquiry and then interpreting what they need and how you would manufacture it is very rewarding and uses all my technical knowledge. "

How did I get here?

"My Dad was a metallurgist too. I once appeared on TV with Richard Hammond as his technical expert explaining about stainless steels and what happens to them at very low temperatures. I got to spend the day with him playing with liquid nitrogen and breaking bits of metal, which was a lot of fun. "

The life I live

"In my spare time, I enjoy reading, sewing and watching TV."

My typical day

"There is no such thing as a typical day. I could be working on new quotations, following up on quotations, providing expediting reports on orders, dealing with complaints or travelling to see customers all over the world."

My qualifications

"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels) Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) A Level Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths Undergraduate degree (BSc, BA, etc.) BEng (hons) Science & Engineering of Metals (First Class) Management, FMEA, 8D "
