Senior Project Manager at Leeds Beckett University

Be tough. It is still a challenging environment to operate in. In my experience, if you have people skills, good communication and are organised, you will go a long way. You have to earn respect but once you have, you can surround yourself with a loyal team who will support you and work with you to make sure that projects are a success.

About Francesca...

Who am I?

"As a Project Manager your entire role is to coordinate teams and influence those teams to do the work you require. Communication is key to both of those aspects. Given this, it seems obvious that my two strongest personalities would be Communicator and Coordinator."

What do I do?

"My job is to put technology into buildings. Sometimes these are new buildings and I would be involved from the very start, even before the land is purchased. Other times, it is a renovation of the existing building and we are updating it for students or staff. Buildings without technology are just boxes in today’s world. Everywhere you see a PC or a Mac, it is my team that made it happen. The Wi-Fi on your phone is my team, the screens on the walls and printers in corridors are all my team. The thousands of wires that run through the building, under floors and in the ceilings are all my team. Buildings are like bodies. Think of the steel framework as a skeleton, the bricks and plaster as a skin and we are the veins and organs that make everything work. We bring buildings to life. You can touch and walk around buildings, people sit in them and use the facilities without any idea of how they got there or what they looked life at each stage of their creation. I have progressed a lot over a ten year period. I could progress further if I wanted to directly manage more staff, although it would take me away from projects, so it is not something I would consider right now."

How did I get here?

"I have always loved buildings. As a little girl I built and designed houses from Lego. I was very lucky that my parents promoted to me that I could do anything I wanted and being female made no difference to that. I dread the first day of walking on to a new building site. I always feel as though I have to prove myself more that the men as I am often the only woman. Sometimes I have to look a lot more confident than I feel until I am able to build relationships and the team forget my gender. This job forces you to be amazing at networking and building connections."

The life I live

"I design and re-design my dream home. I project managed the house I am in now but couldn't really afford to do everything I wanted. One day I will though - so I need my designs ready for when the time comes!"

My typical day

"I might be on a building site or in an office. I am sometime crawling around under floorboards or presenting to a Board of Governors. I can easily spend half the day in a nice skirt suit and heels and the other half in jeans, hard hat and a high-visibility vest."

My qualifications
