About Giounona...

Who am I?

"Giounona is an Engineer working for the computing company ARM, creating smart cameras that can understand what they see.Giounona needs to be persistent and self-reliant in her job, in order to do research to solve problems that have not been solved so far by other scientists. This really suits her personality since she is an ‘Explorer’ type. She often works in collaboration with colleagues, and so it is important for her to also be empathic. The smart cameras that Giounona is working to create could one day be used by people in lots of important fields and so this also links Giounona to the ‘Service provider’ and ‘Quality Controller’ types."

What do I do?

"Giounona is an Engineer working for the computing company ARM, creating smart cameras that can understand what they see.Giounona does research in the area of machine learning and computer vision. She is designing smart cameras that can understand and make use of what they see. Cameras that can identify what is in front of the lenses (i.e. people, cars, geographic features) and use that data in lots of ways - perhaps to identify people and things, provide security warnings or improve defence systems. Her role involves her investigating possible solutions to problems, software development, collaborating with colleagues and other scientists and attending meetings. She enjoys working with her colleagues towards a common goal and demonstrating their achievements. Giounona also enjoys participating in different social and charity activities organised in her company."

How did I get here?

"Giounona has been inspired by her mum’s strength and passion for progress and also by a teacher at school who showed his trust in her abilities. She also found her supervisor at university very supportive and forward-thinking. Giounona studied Computer Science as an undergraduate, and then did a postgraduate course in Internet Computing and Network security. However, Computer Vision won her over and she decided to do a PhD in that area. After that, Giounona worked as a research fellow at Kingston University and then as a research engineer at Apical. Her starting salary in her current role was £35,000."

The life I live

"In her spare time, Giounona enjoys spending time with her family and friends, as well as going to the gym and doing a variety of other sports. She also likes playing the piano, painting, reading and volunteering for charities. Giounona loves travelling, and as a child she lived in many different countries. The nature of her job now involves keeping up with advances in technology, and so she has opportunities to travel to related conferences. There are also plenty of opportunities for progression in Giounona’s company. In the near future she can see herself working in a company on an exciting project. In the more distant future she would like to one day be teaching at a university."
