About Anne...

Who am I?

"Anne is a Costing and Data Modelling Lead Analyst providing information on the costs of major project for a leading water company. Anne says she is good with money which is key to this role! She is the ‘Quality Controller’ type which is a good fit with someone organising and monitoring budgets and she is a ‘Coordinator’ in this role for both the water company and the engineers and managers she works with, as well as ensuring the local community and environment get good value from the water company. She describes herself as efficient and conscientious and these are good skills for someone investigating and analysing data for projects on this scale. "

What do I do?

"As a Costing and Data Modelling Lead Analyst, Anne provides information on the costs of major projects for a leading water company. Anne gathers and analyses data and develops models to estimate the costs of major water infrastructure projects, such as wastewater treatment works, reservoirs, water networks and sewerage schemes. She uses mathematical cost modelling software to work out how much it will cost to build, renovate or repair infrastructure, whilst reducing the carbon footprint. She works on multi-million-pound projects and advises the water company on its investment plan for the next five years. Budgets are tight in this regulated business, but Anne’s work helps ensure that we have clean water and good sewerage systems. When looking at the costs of projects, Anne may be looking at site plans, choosing correct models, and liaising with engineers, managers and partners as well as other water companies. Anne enjoys working on many different projects and meeting all sorts of people, and especially likes the flexible working that her job offers. She also likes that she can visit water sites that are not open to the general public. "

How did I get here?

"Anne completed her degree and worked as a research chemist in the pharmaceutical industry and she spent some time researching cancer treatments. She then did an MSc in Water Treatment Process Engineering, before going on to work as a clean water microbiologist. Anne then took a 20-year career break to look after her family, working as a School Business Manager, before returning to work in this role in 2015. A Data Modelling Analyst nowadays can earn about £27,000 starting salary with opportunity to progress as skills and responsibilities increase.Anne cannot believe how much she enjoys being part of civil engineering projects and learning about reservoirs, clean and waste water, sea outfalls and fish passes! She says it is great, especially at her age, to have not just a job, but an exciting career. Clean water and wastewater removal is critical for all our health and welfare and she is part of that process. "

The life I live

"Anne enjoys going to the gym, doing fitness classes and swimming. She likes to keep in touch with her family who are scattered all round the UK and Europe, as well as North and South America. She still does the accounts for her local Girl Guiding unit where she was a Guide Leader. Anne also enjoys being supported by her company to be a STEM Ambassador. Anne says it is possible to have a family/career break and return to an interesting and exciting technical, professional role."

My typical day

"I based in a large open plan office, but sometimes work at other company offices or at home. My role relies on the use of specialist databases and mapping software, so I am at my computer (with two big screens) most of the time. I use site maps to work out where treatment processes are located and how they fit together. I work closely with civil and process engineers in different teams around the business to determine the best long term option before a construction project starts. So attending meetings to discuss issues and share knowledge is an important part of my day, but the sheer variety means it is always interesting. Site visits also help understanding!"

My qualifications

"A levels in Chemistry, Biology and Economics (but should have done Maths)BSc (Hons) Chemical & Pharmaceutical Science, which included a 12 month paid industrial placement during third year of degree; worked a a research chemist with a pharmaceutical company.MSc Water Treatment Process Engineering, which included a three month research project with Severn Trent Water.AAT level 2 Certificate in Accounting; taken while working as a School Business Manager"
