Performance and Regulation Engineer at RWE Generation UK
The female brain works in a totally different way to the male brain and it is our creative way of thinking and problem solving that is desperately needed in STEM today!
About Eleri...
Who am I?
"It is important for Eleri to be the ‘Quality Controller’ type as adhering to government regulations is a major part of her role. She is logical and is not afraid to challenge poor performance or suggest and develop acceptable processes that work for everyone. When Eleri is project planning, she is considerate and makes sure she involves all relevant stakeholders in the planning process so that everyone is engaged and has invested interest in successful outcomes. This fits with the ‘Service provider’ type.Eleri is a friendly person, and as the ‘Trainer’ type she enjoys sharing her expertise with colleagues and looking out for interns both work-wise and in a pastoral capacity. She leads on diversity awareness at the power station and helps to design and deliver presentations on the subject to colleagues and senior managers. "
What do I do?
"As a Performance and Regulation Engineer in a power station, Eleri monitors and checks all processes and activities to make sure everything is working as planned.Eleri’s role is incredibly varied as she crosses three different disciplines: Chemistry, Performance, and Commercial Optimisation. Her main tasks include monitoring the conditions in the boiler at the power station and applying strategies to prevent long term corrosion. She also investigates thermal performance of the station, identifies areas of loss and implements strategies to overcome these, as well as optimising the timing of maintenance activities to reduce commercial losses where possible. It can be very costly if part of the plant is not working or breaks down."
How did I get here?
"Eleri was inspired by her Dad who works in the Chemical Industry. She did a work experience placement at his place of work during her GCSEs and A-Levels where she shadowed Chemical Engineers. She found the work very interesting and liked the balance between practical site work and calculation and data analysis. When choosing her degree, she wanted a course with a strong vocational element and was keen to work in a STEM area where she could apply her knowledge and work in a practical environment. Eleri studied for an undergraduate Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at university, including a year in industry at Pembroke Power Station, followed by a placement at Aberthaw Power Station. She was particularly interested in power generation as some of the modules she studied covered developing technologies in this sector and that interested her greatly. She went on to secure a permanent position at Pembroke Power Station with a starting salary of £30,000."
The life I live
"Eleri likes a challenge and recently completed the Welsh Three Peaks. She also loves keeping in touch with friends from school and university and they regularly meet up for gigs, fun activities and holidays. She loves to travel and has been to many countries around the globe. Her company is based across Europe and she will have the opportunity to visit other sites as her role develops. At school Eleri won a national competition that celebrated the life and work of one of her heroes, Charles Darwin. She followed in his footsteps and visited The Galapagos Islands and got to swim with turtles and sea lions and walk across a volcanic crater. She hopes to go back one day! In the future, Eleri would like to work through all of the technical aspects of her job and to remain in a problem-solving role. She is part of the development program in her company and has already had the opportunity to cover the role of a lead engineer. As far as she is concerned, there is no ceiling!"
My typical day
"Every day is different for Eleri, she may start by attending production meetings to discuss any issues that have arisen overnight, as well as creating action plans for ongoing projects. She will constantly check and monitor live data streams. She creates reports detailing emissions and efficiencies and may have to present these. Eleri has been involved in major outages where turbines were taken out of their housings and stripped down to their basic components as part of the maintenance procedures. This only happens every 5 years and is a major undertaking. She found it quite inspiring to see something so complex broken down and then rebuilt in this way."
My qualifications
"Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering"
