About Sian...

Who am I?

"Sian is working as a Higher Degree Apprentice in IT for Siemens, a major telecommunications company.Sian fits well with the ‘Trainer’ type as she loves to help and train people to do something that they couldn't do before. Her job involves a lot of this, especially when introducing new hardware and software into the business. She is also an organised person and draws on this to run workshops with the shop floor to encourage users to become more tech-friendly and assist them with any IT issues they have. Sian shows her friendly and considerate side working on the IT Service desk. Since she provides a service to our users onsite, she matches the ‘Coodinator’ type exactly. Sian is also keen to demonstrate the ‘Manager’ type as she aspires to manage a team of people as she progresses throughout her career."

What do I do?

"As a Higher Degree Apprentice in IT, Sian works primarily on the IT Service Desk. Onsite users can log a request for support for anything from a keyboard being broken to the whole shop floor being down! Sian and the IT team will respond. The team also work on projects going on in the factory, for example installing new printers on site and training users to use them. The main outcomes of Sian’s work are to make sure that users are happy with their experience and that tech equipment is in working order."

How did I get here?

"Sian has always loved IT and tech. At school she had female IT teachers who encouraged her to pursue IT and she did A-Level IT & BTEC Business LV3. After leaving school, Sian first did an apprenticeship at a doctor’s surgery and then went on to work at a hospital. Her starting salary was £9,000. She then did work experience at Siemens and from that made connections within the business. She heard about the role she is in now from an old colleague and applied.None of Sian’s family went to university, but her Higher Degree Apprenticeship role has led her to take a degree, which makes her really proud. She is paid to work and study, and has her University fees paid by her employer.Sian sees herself working as a Team Leader or Manager within an IT User Engagement Role."

The life I live

"Sian enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She goes to the gym as often as possible, and finds this a good way to clear her head. She also loves to travel the world and her goal is to visit a new country at least twice a year! Through her work, she travels around the UK a lot for conventions and seminars, as well as for volunteering opportunities such as woodwork building for the Cheshire Wildlife Trust. Working for a global company also gives her the opportunity to visit sites in other countries like China and Germany.Once her apprenticeship has finished, Sian is hoping to be offered a full-time role or more training. She can see herself working in more of a training and development role for IT or user engagement. She also likes the idea of working in a different country."

My typical day

"Every day is different in Sian’s job! She normally has a morning meeting with the IT Team, before checking and completing her queue of tasks from the IT Service Desk. She will also have meetings with users for issues such as new laptops, new phones or broken equipment. As an apprentice, Sian is supported to do volunteering, which involves working with local schools and communities. She also loves spending time with work experience students and inspiring them to follow the route they really want to do."
