About Emma...
Who am I?
"Emma is a Joining Engineer, responsible for the joining of the metal structure in cars, which is crucial for the safety of passengers. The 'Communicator' personality type fits Emma well as she collaborates with lots of different areas of the business. She needs to keep asking questions and looking out for new technologies, and being the 'Explorer' personality type ensures she is inquisitive and wants to find out about the latest developments in industry. Joining is quite a technical area and needs to be very carefully considered in the design of products and manufacturing plants. A large portion of Emma’s role requires her to explain and teach new concepts to engineers across the business, which fits with the ‘Trainer’ type."
What do I do?
"Emma works for leading car manufacture, Jaguar Land Rover. Emma’s company uses robots to pick up each car part and join the metal panels together using a wide range of different techniques such as welding and mechanical fasteners. Emma works on the new products that are being designed to help choose the right joining technology to use. She also works on developing new joining technologies. This is an important aspect of the safety of the finished vehicle.Emma usually splits her time between meetings with colleagues and desk work on her own, replying to emails, creating presentations, reviewing and writing technical information, analysing test results and planning test work. Meetings are held to give updates on projects, discuss issues, communicate information to a wider team and make decisions. Emma also visits different sites and manufacturing plants."
How did I get here?
"Emma did Maths, Physics and Chemistry A-Levels. She then went on to university to study Physical Natural Sciences. By her third year, she had specialised in Materials Science which she went on to do a Masters degree in. She completed her final year project in Biomaterials on a potential material for a spinal implant. When she left university, Emma got a 12-month internship at the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. This gave her a good insight into different industries that she could work in and she applied to graduate schemes. She accepted an offer to join the Product Engineering graduate scheme at Jaguar Land Rover. After completing the 2-year graduate scheme, she started her permanent role with a starting salary of £31,000."
The life I live
"In her spare time, Emma enjoys meeting up with friends and family. She also loves food and cooking so often cooks for friends or goes out to eat. She is quite active and plays netball every week. She is also training for a half-marathon.Emma has just bought a house and is spending a lot of time doing DIY. This really suits her interests because it combines practicality with creativity and design.Emma recently went to Germany to visit suppliers and she will have the opportunity to visit suppliers in the USA and other countries. She is also planning to visit plants in Slovakia and China over the coming months."
