Dominique Ng
Safety, Heath, Environment and Quality Manager at DNG
I enjoy working with a diverse and inclusive work group – I am disabled and it has never held me back.
About Dominique...
Who am I?
"Dominique keeps people safe in the railway construction environment. She is a supportive, friendly and conscientious. As the ‘Manager’ type, she believes that it is important to make sure people behave and work in a safe way that does not damage the environment – even if she is not there to keep an eye on them. The ‘Investigator’ type fits with her looking at how people are working, what they are doing, and deciding if they are doing anything that is unsafe. The ‘Innovator’ side of her personality is shown in her drive to succeed, and in running her own business."
What do I do?
"Dominique has her own business and works on railway infrastructure construction including tracks, bridges, tunnels, signalling and junctions. Her job is to look after the wellbeing of the construction team that she works with, making sure that everyone stays safe. As a Quality and Compliance Manager, she is responsible for health and safety on railway construction sites. She also makes sure everyone works in an environmentally-friendly way, and that all work is up to standard and done properly.Dominique works both in the office and on site, she can work from home and she has travelled across the whole of the UK for her work."
How did I get here?
"Dominique’s dad supported and encouraged her to choose an engineering career. She was enrolled on a week-long ‘Women in Engineering’ course at secondary school which gave her an idea about the types of jobs and people in engineering and how well she would fit in. Dominique went to university to study Project Management in Construction. She completed her degree and then did a postgraduate degree. In 2008 she joined a graduate scheme with a large company and has progressed to running her own business. "
The life I live
"Dominique is a mum, she has two little girls who she adores and she spends a lot of her spare time doing activities with her family. She says she manages her work and life balance really well, and says that maternity leave and return to work processes are great now, allowing you to have both the family and the career that you really want.Dominique even finds time to be a STEM ambassador where she goes into schools, and her community, to carry out STEM activities and to encourage children to look at STEM careers. "
My typical day
"A typical day for Dominique involves reviewing work plans to see how work will be carried out. She also coaches and mentors new team members and manages information to feed back to senior managers that work is on track. Dominique also investigates any incidents or accidents and works with the team to make sure these do not happen again."
My qualifications
"Dominique went to university to study Project Management in Construction. "
