About Holly...
Who am I?
"I work with the design and production teams to ensure that the products manufactured at Rolls-Royce are high quality and to the standards that customers expect.I am the ‘Communicator’ type – friendly, diplomatic, helpful and collaborative – all skills that help make me successful in the role within my team. Managing individuals and making sure everything is running smoothly is a big part of my job and this requires good communication skills. I identify as the ‘Trainer’ and ‘Coach’ types which fit well as I am always making sure all my team are OK and offering help when they need it."
What do I do?
"I have an important role in Rolls-Royce, a company well known all round the world for its high-quality engineering products. My work, ensuring high standards, helps maintain the reputation of my company. As a measurement specialist I make sure that the methods used to measure aeroplane engine parts are the best they possibly can be. Quite specialised, technical equipment is used to make very precise measurements and I make sure it is accurate and fit for the job, and designs ways to accurately carry out measurements. A failure of any part could lead to an engine failure and lives could be lost. I move between my office, team meetings and the assembly line with its robotics and automated machinery each day. I need to understand any problems and help to solve these quickly with team members. I may be responding to colleagues working in Germany or Singapore. One project at Heathrow Airport required me to organise the maintenance on planes in hangars between their flying slots, so there were no delays to everyone’s holiday flights! "
How did I get here?
"Before I went to University, I did a ‘year in industry’ on a placement at the manufacturing firm Saint-Gobain. I really enjoyed working in manufacturing engineering and this helped me to decide to study Mechanical Engineering at degree level.I joined the graduate scheme at Rolls-Royce straight from University and started on a salary of £28,000. I landed a job in the measurement team, before moving into my current role as Measurement Lead. I am a Chartered Engineer and plan to one day run my own Engineering department and travel a lot.A key inspiration for me was my grandfather, who was also an engineer. He designed and built the first large-scale freezer in Bahrain to store chickens before they were sold to consumers! "
The life I live
"My spare time is spent with my young son and two horses. I enjoy competing my horses when I finds the time. In addition to this, I also have a musical side and is a member of a concert band where I play the drums. Not only am I sporty and musical, I am also creative and enjoys spending my time sewing clothes and running craft workshops. In the future, I would like to live in the countryside with even more horses and children!"
My typical day
"Half of my day is spent at my laptop, replying to emails, running meetings, reviewing our measurement performance and planning projects for the future. The other half of my day is spent on the manufacturing sites where we make aerospace parts. Here I support the measurement engineers to problem solve, improve the current ways of measuring products and looking for ways to save money or make the measurement process more efficient. My job involves running longer term projects to see improvements in the way we make things as well as solving day-to-day issues and I really enjoy this variety. "
My qualifications
"A levels in Maths, Business Studies, Physics and Music. Year In Industry placement for 12 months for Saint Gobain PAM UK in the Process Engineering Department. Masters of Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Edinburgh. I also completed a placement every summer during University at various engineering companies to get as much experience as I could. Rolls-Royce graduate engineering programme as a manufacturing engineer. After this I have had various jobs in the manufacturing engineering part of Rolls-Royce, always within the measurement specialty. "
