About Liz...

Who am I?

"I'm what's called an Airworthiness Engineer at Airbus. Airbus is a company which designs and builds aeroplanes and I am in charge when things go wrong - if there's a problem I organise other people to investigate it and then present the results to the Airworthiness Authorities who are overall in charge of all aircraft safety. To do this job you need to be very organised, because there are typically lots of different tasks on the go, you need to be good at communicating so that people understand what you need them to do, and you need to be conscientious and safety-minded to make sure the job is done properly. The job matches perfectly with my Co-ordinator, Manager and Quality Controller personality types and I am very happy doing it."

What do I do?

"As above, when there is a potential problem on an aeroplane I organise the work to be done to investigate it. Sometimes I do the work myself, and other times I ask specialists.Every day is different in my role, and I'm always learning new things. I enjoy that and I also enjoy seeing aeroplanes that I've worked on fly over me!The starting salary for my role was £25,000 in 2011, but it went up to £40,000 by the time I'd worked here for 5 years. "

How did I get here?

"I'm not the type of person to plan for the future, but when a decision has come up I've made the best decision at the time and been happy to see where life takes me. I recommend applying for all the opportunities you can and picking the best one when the time comes! At school, I was really interested in music and thought hard about going into it as a career. In the end I realised that I could have music as a hobby but have a good, well-paid, secure job as well. It was a difficult choice but I still think I've made the right decision.Growing up I didn't really know what I wanted to do. I thought about being a vet but fainted when I did work experience with a vet so realised it wasn't for me! I knew I wanted to go to university but I didn't decide what to study until I had to start applying for universities. This drifting approach isn't for everyone but is how my mind works!I was reading university prospectuses when I saw information about a degree in 'Aerospace Engineering'. It sounded really interesting to me, learning about how aeroplanes are designed, and I had the required A levels (Maths and Physics) so I went to university to study that. After university I ended up getting a job in aeroplane design, working for Airbus."

The life I live

"I play the oboe and the piano and am in a local orchestra. I also like running and cycling, and skiing in winter. I met my husband on my degree. We have two cats, and are hoping to one day have children."

My typical day

"I work in an office on a computer all day, which growing up I thought would be really boring, but it's like my computer is my window to the world. I use it for everything; doing calculations, writing reports, replying to emails, getting things done and chatting to my friends to organise a coffee break!"

My qualifications

"I did GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, Design Technology, English Language, English Literature, French, Latin, Maths, Music, Physics and Statistics. I then did A-Levels in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics."
