About Dr Allyson...

Who am I?

"Allyson is a Knowledge Engineer – she describes and structures scientific information, helping researchers share and discover data. She is a ‘Coordinator’ type, logical and curious, great skills for analysing information and data. This helps her to think through the information, find the meaning of it, and then share it with others so they can make use of it. Allyson is self-motivated, which is really important as she works independently from home and needs to make sure she gets the work done. "

What do I do?

"Allyson manages, structures and promotes the sharing of scientific data and information, setting standards, and organising and describing data so that it can be easily shared. The information she gathers can help researchers work together, share information, and discover new research in medicine, food production, agriculture, and a range of other areas. She works on the https://fairsharing.org project, which helps researchers, journals and scientific communities share data effectively and openly.Day to day, her role involves writing code, writing documents, analysing information and helping colleagues. Allyson works from home, but says that science is not a lonely route. She often makes conference calls with colleagues discussing data, solving problems and talking about future directions for the business. Allyson loves to travel. She attends scientific conferences all over the world and has been to Australia, the USA, Germany, Italy and Spain. Data analysts can earn between from £23,000 to £70,000 per year. "

How did I get here?

"Allyson was inspired by her high school Biology teacher, Mr. Clark, at Monterey High School in California. She therefore went on to take a double major in Biology and Ancient Mediterranean Civilisations at Rice University in Houston, Texas, USA where she graduated with a BA (Bachelor of Arts). As part of her degree she had an exchange year at the University of Bristol, which she loved. She decided to do a master’s in Biological Computation at the University of York and then got her first job as a Software Engineer for the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) in Cambridge. Allyson then decided to do a PhD while working full time as a Research Associate at the University of Newcastle. After her PhD, Allyson took on a short-term position at the University of Manchester where she worked as an ontologist, a specialist in structuring and classifying data, before beginning her current role as a Knowledge Engineer for the University of Oxford."

The life I live

"Allyson is delighted that her role means she can work from home, and balance work and looking after her two sons. She loves sporty activities such as running, yoga and swimming. She is also arty and enjoys knitting, painting, drawing, sewing, face painting and cake decorating! Allyson says that exploring the creative side of things is part of who she is outside of work, but also translates to key aspects of her job as having a great imagination helps make you a great researcher! Allyson has a passion for sharing knowledge, which also makes her a great ambassador for STEM. "
