Lecturer / trainer

Lecturers may work in a University, carrying out research as well as teaching. They could be teaching academic subjects such as English, History or Physics or teaching vocational (work related) subjects such as Veterinary Science, Mechatronics or Civil Engineering. As a lecturer, you might be researching blast waves from explosions on a firing range, migration patterns of birds or stress analysis of bridges. Whatever your interest there will be a lecturer who teaches that subject and who is finding out more around that subject. Lecturers also work in Further Education colleges, they may have vocational and industrial experience, and they will be training young people in work related skills such as car maintenance, digital technology and games design as well as supporting them to access university. Further Education lecturers will focus more on teaching than University lecturers. University technicians can also carry out teaching roles. Lecturers and trainers need to be good with people - curiosity and persistence are good skills for researchers to have. University lecturers need a good degree in the subject you want to teach and may need a master’s degree or a PhD. Further Education lecturers do not require a degree but will need to have good Maths and English qualifications, ICT skills, as well as good industrial experience and qualifications in their chosen subject. Higher Education lecturers earn from £33,000 to £55,000 per year.
