Building Services Engineer

Building Services Engineers design, install and service equipment and systems in buildings such as offices, shops, schools, factories and hospitals. These can include all the electrics (power and lighting), heating and cooling systems, water systems, alarms and security systems, fire safety systems, and phone and technology systems.  Engineers will design systems to reduce environmental impact and to reduce bills – using low energy lighting, monitoring and controlling temperatures. Can’t find a plug to charge your phone? Imagine how important it is in a hospital to have power points where they are needed for all the equipment they use. Building Services Engineers  make sure that designs for structures, components and services comply with building regulations and health and safety requirements. They may be using CAD software to produce designs and building information, or estimating the costs of the installation and planning project timings using specialist software. Some Building Services Engineers will be installing equipment themselves or as part of a team. An organised approach to work, and good problem solving skills are useful skills for this role. Maths and physics qualifications will be really useful especially if you are designing and developing systems, and you will probably be supported to learn to use CAD software as part of your training. Building Services Engineers can earn from £20,000 to £50,000 per year.
