The UK Space Agency leads the UK’s efforts to explore and use space to benefit us all.

We’re responsible for all strategic decisions on the UK’s civilian space programme and make sure that Government investments in space science and technology add value to the UK economy and people’s lives. The UK Space Agency works in partnership with industry and universities to develop new technologies, infrastructure and services, and to ensure that the UK thrives in the commercial space age. 

The UK Space Agency:

• supports the work of space organisations across the UK, at home and abroad, to help our economy to grow
• invests in science and exploration to improve our understanding of the universe and our own planet, and deliver practical benefits such as new technologies to life on Earth
• inspires the next generation of UK scientists and engineers
• provides a safe and supportive regulatory environment for the launch and operation of UK spacecraft, launch operators and UK spaceports
• promotes global co-operation in space, through the UK’s membership of the European Space Agency and international partnerships.

Our phones and satnavs work out where they are using positioning information from navigation satellites, we decide what to wear using information from weather satellites, every time we buy something online the time and date stamp is provided by satellite technology and information from Earth observation satellites can help us look after our planet.

The UK Space Agency is an executive agency, sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, which means we are a part of Government and because of that, all of us are civil servants. You can work in the civil service if you have interests in all sorts of different topics and backgrounds. Scientists and engineers are especially needed so that they can apply their knowledge across many different industries and sectors – we just happen to think that Space is the BEST!
