About Josie...
Who am I?
"I believe the personality types developer, investigator, and manager match me quite well. Some of the main qualities of a developer are being creative, they enjoy learning new things, are flexible and practical, and can work both independently and well in a team. My role involves many projects that are collaborative with cross-functional teams across a range of disease areas, as anti-infectives impact many disease areas so being able to pick knowledge quickly is vital. In my role I create a lot of education materials for the general public and healthcare professionals. Some of the main qualities of an investigator are logical thinking, collaboration, and being good at collecting ideas and information from people and things. Due to the broad subject area in my role utilising the people in your team to share knowledge and expertise is essential, and exposes you to different opinions and perspectives. Some of the main qualities of a manager are the ability to adapt, be open minded, be organised, and be team orientated. This fits with my role as often in projects I have to play different roles including leading the project.Across all 3 of the personalities being good in a team is fundamental and this is a skill that I have and utilise daily in my role."
What do I do?
"Medical affairs is often described as the bridge between the commercial side of the pharmaceutical industry and the healthcare community. We do not promote any products or services instead focus on the education of healthcare professionals and ensure compliance and medical integrity. My role involves a lot of education for the general public and healthcare professionals around antimicrobial stewardships and issues with antimicrobial resistance. I work on a range of resources including videos, educational events, panel discussions, educational campaigns, and social media posts. I love the broad subject area I work within and the importance of the messages we share. The power of education is paramount in my role and improving health literacy is something I have been passionate about for a long time."
How did I get here?
"I completed A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology. Following this I joined the University of Warwick to study Biomedical Science. During the summer between first and second year I completed a 4 week internship with a medical writing company, which gave me invaluable skills and an increased insight into a what a career in the medical side of pharmaceuticals looks like. The skills gained from the internship helped me secure my placement at Pfizer. Following this placement I will return to university to finish my final year of my degree."
The life I live
"In my spare time I love kayaking, yet have a fear of open water. I know, what a contradiction! I love being active so regularly go to the gym, and attend dance classes whilst at university through my society."
My typical day
"A typical day at work starts at 9am and involves a lot of meetings both with internal people from Pfizer or external companies that are involved with projects. There typically is a lot of social interaction which I love because of these meetings, however some days it is a lot of emails, or independent project work. This can involve research for manuscripts, creating scripts for videos, and ensuring timelines are on track. My role has a hybrid structure which means I only have to be in the office 2/3 days a week which I love as I can have a bit more of a lie in on a Monday and don't have to deal with rush hour traffic on a Friday! It also allows more social interactions with colleagues in person."
My qualifications
"A-levels: Biology Chemistry, Psychology, Perspectives on Science Extended Project Qualification (EPQ): Should we Further Restrict our current use of Antibiotics to protect Future Generations from Antimicrobial Resistance?Degree: Biomedical Science BSc with an Industrial Placement Year"
