About Eleanor...

Who am I?

"I feel my personality types match well with how I perceive myself (Coach, Coordinator, Trainer, Communicator, Manager) and the work that I do. I take immense pride in my work and key responsibility within my role is being a problem solver, working with a wide range of people and ensuring that all needs are met (Coach). In order to do this, I must be efficient, organised, and a good listener who can simplify and share complex information to different groups of people (Trainer, Communicator), bringing people together and helping out wherever needed (Coordinator). Finally, I work in a very fast paced and collaborative environment, where being adaptable, open minded, motivated, and able to enthuse and motivate others are critical to the success of the team (Manager)."

What do I do?

"The main focus of my role is developing the overall strategy for how the performance of the product will be tested to meet requirements from regulators, demonstrate our processes are in control, and ensure that the final product will work when it needs to right up to the expiry date on the label. To achieve this, I look at data collected from previous testing, and assess the risk to the patient of different failures in performance, what could be impacted by different steps in the manufacturing process and determine how many samples we need to test to prove that the produce is safe and effective. When things go wrong, I investigate why, using a variety of tools within our labs to establish the root cause of the problem and support decisions regarding changes which may need to be made to reduce the risk of the failure happening again. I particularly enjoy the method development and data analysis parts of my job, working out the best way to test if something is working as it should, and looking into large sets of data to understand if the process is in control. "

How did I get here?

"I have always enjoyed science and biology, but I wasn’t a big fan of plants or physics so a course in biomedical science was perfect for me. During my undergraduate degree I had the opportunity to complete an internship in the department I now work. This opened my eyes to a whole area of industry I didn’t know existed and introduced me to a fantastic group of enthusiastic and inspiring people I cannot imagine not working with now. Once I completed my BSc I had a course change and decided to pursue a career in teaching as I had always had a passion for sharing knowledge. At the time this was the right decision for me and over the course of the qualification, I gained valuable skills in managing large / different groups of people and explaining concepts in different ways to suit different needs whilst improving my overall organisational and time management skills. However, near the end of this course I realised that although I loved sharing and imparting knowledge, I missed the ‘lab’ environment; investigating, problem solving, and learning which are all still strong motivators to be the best that I can be, so I leapt at the opportunity to take a contracting position right back where I did my internship 4 years earlier. Returning to Pfizer I started by assisting wherever possible with manually filling of syringes, testing samples, and generally getting stuck in! This willingness to help where needed, coupled with my strong skills acquired from the PGCE, lead me to a temporary role as document coordinator within my first ‘real’ project. I learned so much in the first year, taking on more responsibility and gaining technical knowledge at each turn until I successfully got my permanent role 2 years later. Since then I have continued to learn, grow, and apply a range of skills which now mean I am considered an expert in a number of areas and a ‘go to’ person when people need help. "

The life I live

"In my spare time I love to go stand up paddle boarding, and in 2022 I completed my first long distance race over 26 km. I also own 2 classic cars which I take on overseas rallies in Europe every year, and enjoy crocheting toys for friends and family. "

My typical day

"A typical day involves authoring and reviewing strategies, plans, and protocols to ensure that the correct testing is done at the right level to demonstrate that the final product is safe and effective. These complex documents and combine information from a wide range of people/teams across the business (i.e. engineers, quality assurance, industrialisation, risk management experts, statisticians). To ensure the success of the project I communicate constantly through emails and meetings, and must manage documents correctly, ensuring they are stored in our global document system and progress through authoring, review and approval within the timelines set out within the wider project. In addition, as an expert on a number of aspects of combination product development, I also support other people in our group, answering questions on what approach should be taken for their project."
