About Sarah...

Who am I?

"I think the personality types of Leader, Influencer and Coach fit me rather well as I enjoy leading teams, presenting and guiding others. I run the Early Career Network at my workplace to train and inspire other early career scientists to further themselves. I also have to have these qualities as I am doing my PhD at a company rather than at a university. I have to have the confidence to present my results to experts in the field and justify the value of my work. I founded the STEM club at school as well which helped young girls to get into STEM related subjects and careers. "

What do I do?

"I am in the second year of my PhD project at Newcastle University and Fera Science Limited. I am studying using genomic tools to monitor eukaryotic pests (Asian hornets and root knot nematodes). I love the bioinformatics side of my job as I enjoy coding. I am on a PhD stipend so it is the same for everyone doing a PhD. "

How did I get here?

"I did an integrated masters at Newcastle University in Cellular and Molecular Biology with Placement Year (201-2022). I did my placement at Procter and Gamble in Brussels in their laundry pod department. When I came back from placement I did 2 research projects in genomics which I loved. I decided I wanted to pursue a PhD to further my knowledge and develop my skills further. I find my mum very inspirational as she is very hard working and is a great leader so I wanted to be like her. "

The life I live

"I like to bake in my spare time. I am famous in my office for my chocolate chip cupcakes and tiffin! I am learning French with a 1 year streak on Duolingo. One of my new years goals is to learn how to crochet. I am currently practicing my granny squares"

My typical day

"I am currently in the second year of my PhD so I am in the middle of doing my laboratory work for my project. I have cut off legs of Asian hornets, extracted their DNA, ran polymerase chain reactions (PCR), gel electrophoresis and sequencing! I am hoping to look at the sequences of the hornets to decide if nests found in the UK are related to each other. All very exciting stuff!"

My qualifications

"I have a first class integrated masters degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology with Placement Year from Newcastle University (2017-2022). I did a placement at Procter and Gamble in Brussels, Belgium in their laundry pod department. When I graduated in 2022, I went straight on to start my PhD project (2022-2026)."
