What do I do?

"I set the vision and key strategies for engineering for the year in order for the FC to see year on year improvement, leading a team of 63 engineers. I love that no two days are the same and its great to be part of a high performing team. "

How did I get here?

"I loved design and technology, maths and physics at school and wanted to do something related to these subjects. I learnt about apprenticeships and thought how fantastic, I can learn and develop a career whilst getting paid. I applied for an apprenticeship at Imperial Tobacco and got offered a role in 1997! I was the first female apprentice Imperial Tobacco had, so was exciting and also daunting. I completed my apprenticeship and moved into a maintenance engineering role after completion of apprenticeship. After 2 years, I got a promotion to Project Engineer, managing capital projects, installing new machinery and improvement projects across the Imperial Tobacco network, whilst also completing a HND and BSc degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. After 3 years as a project engineer, I decided to take a career break and spent a year travelling the world, which was fantastic. After my travels, I decided to take a consultancy role within the food industry working with small to medium businesses working on technology innovation and efficiency improvement projects for 3 years, before joining Allied Bakeries as National Continuous Improvement Manager, leading a UK wide change programme to upskill and embed lean methodologies. After 5 years, I joined Weetabix as Head of Continuous Improvement leading a UK wide factory waste and product yield improvement programme and three years later joining Unilever as Site Engineering Manager to lead the engineering team through an exciting factory expansion programme for three years, before joining Amazon as Reliability, Maintenance and Engineering Manager in 2021."

The life I live

"I am a mum of one girl, Georgia, who is 8. We love to travel and get out in the countryside, hiking in the Peak District and I also enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving when on holiday abroad. "

My typical day

"A typical day starts with reporting on the last 24-hour performance of the FC and checking and replying to emails. Then we have a quick (30 mins) with the team on shift to go through key priorities for the day and rest of week ahead. I attend lots of meetings which review where we are against goals and projects with multiple stakeholders from engineering and operations. Some of the projects I get involved in are about improving processes, like improving throughput and productivity. I have 121’s with my direct reports to listen to how they are doing and how their teams are doing, what barriers / challenges we are seeing and offer support where I can. Each week we have a leadership team meeting where we check in on our performance against our vision and goals. "

My qualifications

"4 year Advance Modern Apprenticeship in Electrical Maintenance – NVQ L3 Electrical Engineering and HND in Electrical and Electronic EngineeringBSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering "
