About Sarah...
Who am I?
"I think the personality types are a good match. They are all transferable skills that apply to most roles I have had in my career. "
What do I do?
"At Pfizer I am leading a patient program to support cancer patients live their lives with cancer by providing an educational platform and day-to-day support via an app. This role involves working with many different colleagues on activities such a promotion, content development, compliance, approvals and technical upgrades. "
How did I get here?
"After embarking on a higher degree with a goal to work in the pharmaceutical industry, I started applying for jobs. A friend had just joined a small medical communication company and asked if I wanted to do some freelance work while I was completing my studies. This was a great opportunity to earn some money and get some more experience. This led into a full-time job at the company as a medical writer, where I was to stay for over 15 years advancing to various other positions every 2-3 years. My eyes were opened to a new career path and I got to work with many different pharmaceutical companies who were our ‘clients’. This role also allowed me the opportunity to spend 3 years living in the US and travelling a lot to events, meetings, medical conferences, where we would provide support to the clients and also organising and working many other events such as advisory boards and educational symposium. I then moved into a smaller start-up company for a few years before joining Pfizer. "
The life I live
"I love various crafts when I get the time as well as spending time outdoors walking my dog. In the last few years I have joined a book club and now help organise it - this has introduced me to lots of different genres and also bookstagram! I've recently got a Peloton exercise bike in a bid to get fitter. "
My typical day
"Everyday is different depending on the projects and current priorities. Much of my time is office based in front of the computer doing several teams calls during the week. I get to contribute to several events during the year and attend conferences, which is really enjoyable. "
My qualifications
"I came from a very non-academic family, but always loved science and I think I got interested in the pharma industry when I did a week’s work experience in the pharmacy at Boots the chemist! After that, I chose my A-levels and wanted to become a pharmacist but I didn’t get the A grades I needed for my first choice so I ended up entering the clearing system. This turned out well (I didn’t feel that at the time!) but landed on my feet with a place at the University of Surrey to study Biochemistry. This degree also included a placement year in Industry, which I completed at GSK (a pharmaceutical company) in Hertfordshire. This was such a great opportunity to experience the world of work and get references and this further reinforced my ambition to work in the pharmaceutical industry. However, after speaking to many people I realised that to optimise my chance of a good career path in industry then I would need a higher degree so after getting my BSc, I applied to do a PhD at Sussex University in the Experimental Psychology department, in collaboration with Eli Lilly (another pharmaceutical company). After this I got a job in medical communications and got to travel and worked abroad for while before getting a job at Pfizer. "
