About Laila...

Who am I?

"My quiz result show that I am a combination of the following personality types: Influencer, Quality Controller and Manager. I feel these results accurately reflect my personality type and fit well with my current profession. I use each of these personalities in different situations in my professional life. For instance, as a Manager I have mentored new Field Application Scientists in learning the ropes of the company and role. I feel it is important to have a mixture of personality traits as this demonstrates your agility to different situations in both personal and professional settings."

What do I do?

"I am a Field Application Scientist working for ThermoFisher Scientific in Australia. My job is very exciting because it involved working closely with people which I absolutely love! My role is to support our customers in using (also learning) our instrumentation to answer various scientific questions. I work with customers from all aspects of science and on different topics from microorganism detection in wine and milk to deep profiling of the human immune system. One thing other than engaging with people that I enjoy about my job is the travel. I cover a big territory (Australia and New Zealand) and this means I travel a lot! "

How did I get here?

"My route to this role was pretty straightforward! I completed my PhD in Immunology and worked in academia before I started my role at ThermoFisher Scientific. In my academic role, I lectured third year Biomedical and Medical students on the Principles of Immunology and Flow Cytometry (a technique used to identify and characterize cells based on the way cells scatter light when excited by laser light). I also mentored Masters and PhD students and was heavily involved in STEM activities at the university I worked at. I have always had a passion for science and so a lot of my past roles (including volunteer positions) have always been centered around science. In high school, I actually volunteered for a pathologist!"

The life I live

"I am a very active person! I enjoy going to the gym, running marathons and playing tennis! I also enjoy reading and going to cafes on the weekend for brunch! Most people will be interested to know I am a shy person as most people see me as very outgoing and extroverted! "

My typical day

"A typical day at work for me is visiting my customers for instrument training or running through experiments. We have many customers all working on unique and interesting science projects and a lot of my day is spent supporting these customers whether they have a question or troubleshooting an experiment."

My qualifications
