About Sam...
Who am I?
"A common theme with all three of my personality matches- Influencer, Developer and Campaigner- is the want to help people. This matches with my job role-EHS specialist- perfectly as I always want to help people and ensure they can do their job as safely and with as much ease as possible. I think the personality types fit with my role well as we have to be able to develop new ways to control risks, influence others on how to take out their role safely and Campaign for the best, healthiest and well rounded workplace for our workforce."
What do I do?
"The main part of my job is simply to ensure people are safe at work. As simple as that sounds, there are a lot of tasks that go into this, below are a few of the main ones:Creating Risk Assessments for all areas and tasks- this is to look at the risk within the area to ensure we can put the right controls in place to stop people from hurting themselves.Investigating Incidents/Accidents- This is a really important part of the job to try and reduce incidents from reoccurringEnsuring there are enough resources and help for people regarding Mental Health and WellbeingI enjoy most of my job but the favourite part is when I have put in a control measure that has helped make someone's job safer.Starting salary of a safety co-ordinator would be roughly £22,000 and go upwards of £30,000 for a specialist and then upwards of £40,000 for a manager."
How did I get here?
"I never knew what I wanted to do with my life/career and chose some subjects at A Levels that I thought I would enjoy. At the same time of being in college I worked in a Restaurant- this was when I realised that it was better for me and my skills to create a career through working than spending further time in education at University. This is not everyone's route and may go against what is classed as the \"norm\" but if you work hard, have fire in your belly and learn from those around you it should help you onto the right track. After spending 5 years in hospitality I decided to do a Hospitality Management degree (at the grand old age of 21) as I had found something that I was good at and wanted to progress up the ladder. Within the first year part of the course was to do a placement for 3 months within the hospitality industry.I decided to do my placement in Australia. This was where my path changed, I got the travel bug. I ended up staying in Australia for 9 months, moving to New Zealand for a year and then over the following 4 years I travelled to parts of Asia, most of South America and a lot of Europe. Once I came home armed with new information on the world, a broader perspective on life I almost had to start again from a career point of view. I worked at a baguette factory packing baguettes, then got a job within the same company in the Quality department and then they put me through the qualification to become a trainer and a Health and Safety advisor (NEBOSH). This was all due to my willingness to learn, help different departments and the passion in which I had for improving different aspects.Once I found my feet as a Health and Safety Advisor I continued to hone my skill in different fields- food, medical, packaging and pharmaceutical. "
The life I live
"I like to travel, go swimming, eat out at different restaurants and spend time with family and friends. I am an avid football fan with a season ticket to Newcastle United so spend a lot of time at matches or watching football on tv.I love scrabble- this may surprise some people as originally I was not overly academic so a word game may not have been the first thing they would think I enjoy but it helps me concentrate and I am really competitive so love to beat people, especially certain family members."
My typical day
"I work nightshift so one of the most important parts of my day and the first thing I do when I start is check my emails to see if there is anything that is needed to be either briefed to the team or to be investigated. We have a system in which any issues that has arose throughout the day is captured within it, I check that to see if any actions are outstanding and if I need to investigate. We have a meeting at either 18:30 or 19:00 (depending on the shift as I work over 2) in which we discuss any issues that have arose within different departments and arrange for the emergency responders to take on certain roles if needed in an emergency (Fire wardens and First Aiders). Then I will look at my list- I write a list every day of what I need to do in the shift- and look to get started. My job priorities change daily depending on if there has been an accident, if Risk Assessments are needed to be complete or if another urgent issue is to be addressed.I always do a safety walk within the Warehouse area as this is our high risk area and do this with either a member of the Warehouse team or a Supervisor. This is to identify if there are any safety issues.I will spend some time within the main production (the lab) area and look for any improvements that we can put in place. Recently helping to relieve some manual handling strains by identifying a different way of storing certain heavy items which has helped reduce incidents within that area.A big part of my role is ensuring the Wellbeing of the staff is being taken care of and people have access to the right resources if they need help. I spend a lot of time researching and contacting different companies to help with this aspect as I am currently arranging some Mental Health and Well being days for May. Day to day activities change but we are always looking at ways to improve the safety of the site, this could mean spending time analysing data to identify where our incidents have occurred and what we can do to stop them from happening in the future."
