About Caroline...
Who am I?
"I am a communicator, co-ordinator and influencer. This shows in my role as I spend my day talking to teams and finding out what they do, and where it could go wrong and how they think it would work better. Some say I'm being nosey - but its part of the job. I co-ordinate teams to work together and my influence skills come in where i think they need to be steered in a certain direction. When I hear 'I've always done it this way' i have to try and convince them there is a better way. ."
What do I do?
"I still can't get my head around the fact that in 2021-2022, 123 people went to work and got killed. That is 123 families devasted by that life lost. We think about deaths and injuries in the work place as something that use to happen when the coal pits were open or the cotton mills were running back in the 1800's, but its still happening today. The EHS team work with managers and team leaders to create safety work places. We ensure that safety legislation is being followed, and that tools and equipment are in place and being used correctly to ensure that employees jobs are safer. Often by making things safer, we make the job easier and so we use this to influence our teams to try new methods which they may not have tried before. We design posters to inspire others to work safer; we work with training companies to develop skills in our workplace; we look at trends - what activity is causing the most accidents in our workplace? What can we do to stop it?The best thing about this job is that Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) are involved in every aspect of a company and we work with every department. For me, when we as part of a team, update something so that it is safer and the employees love it too, this is the best reward and why I love my job. Everyday I learn something new as well as being expert in other fields."
How did I get here?
"As part of my University degree in Manufacturing Engineering I completed a sandwich year in an electronics company. Once my degree was completed I returned to the same company and worked as a Graduate Manufacturing Engineering. The company closed after 2 years, and so i applied on the Nissan Graduate Scheme as an Environmental Engineer in one of their supply chains within the Safety department. The role came with training and so I only had to show I had a passion for the subject. I worked only on Environmental projects (waste, energy etc) for 2 years. As my placement was coming to a close, I started to see how I could make safety improvements too, and so i got my IOSH Managing Safety qualification and then NEBOSHH Safety Certificate. I then applied to be a Health, Safety and Environmental Advisor for another engineering company, and with each new role and new company I have moved higher to become a Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Mgr."
The life I live
"I am quite creative (which come in handy with the job), so i like sewing, puzzles and trying new crafts. The environmental part of me likes to be outdoors and so i enjoy walking and making the most of any sunshine. I love the beach and the sea - so if there's any good rock pool nearby I am often found trying to spot something in them or having a dip in the sea."
My typical day
"As the business is operational 24 hours a day 7 days a week, my day usually begins with catching up on emails and any accidents or hazards that have been raised overnight. If any of these are serious where someone has been injured then I immediately head to the area and start investigating what happened. I do this by speaking to the team members, the employee themselves, and collect any further information from documents. I then start to put a corrective action plan in place, working with the teams to prevent it happening again. Depending on the seriousness of this, then I could be working on this all day.If nothing significant has occurred overnight, I will have a walk around the site and talk to a few people about how their tasks are going and if there is anything which concerns them from a safety perspective. I will note any findings and get team members involved in improvements.During the day I will focus on project work to help us achieve our goals. This could be looking through our waste to see what other recycling opportunities we could develop, or speaking to a supplier about to swap product we buy into a more sustainable substitute. I will often work with the Maintenance Manager to ensure that our fire safety standards are up to date; I may also be asked to complete a COSHH (Control of substances Hazardous to Health) assessment to ensure any chemicals that are being brought to site is safe for us to store and handle and will not put anyone at any risk (if it was an acid for example). The role is varied and no day is the same - which is what i enjoy about it. I do not spend all day in front of a screen and because the role covers environment, health and safety I could be completing a task about energy usage in the morning, then move onto mental wellbeing in the afternoon."
