About Elena...

Who am I?

"I can see aspects of myself in all three personality types I have been given. Being a problem solver and understanding the needs of others comes up multiple times across the three personality types and is something I would identify with strongly. It is important in my role to be able to understand the customer needs whilst balancing Air Products resources and with having such a diverse customer portfolio, there is always a new problem to be solved. I think I most identify with the developer personality type as I can see all the elements in myself. I am happy working both by myself and in a team, which is another aspect of my role that I enjoy as it gives me the opportunity for a lot of collaboration across many business areas as well as the individual projects I have. I am a very sociable person, so I like being in a role that means I speak to lots of different people each day! The investigator personality I think also suits me well as I am a very logical person, something that I think helped me with my engineering degree! Also being cooperative and honest are attributes that make working with others easier and more rewarding. I probably would not have put myself down as an innovator however I think many of the traits are surprisingly accurate! I would describe myself as confident, open minded and strong-willed, which are all traits that suit my commercial career well!"

What do I do?

"As an Asset Manager I am responsible for the UK & Ireland portfolio of non-cryogenic generators; what that means is all the customers who have Air Products generators on their sites to produce their own nitrogen or oxygen. My chemical engineering degree is critical to this role, even though it is a commercial position, as I have in depth technical understanding of the equipment and can effectively collaborate with the technicians and operators to make sure we provide the best service! What I love about being an Asset Manager is that almost no two days are the same, I am always working on new projects whether it be looking at fitting a new compressor at a customer site or starting a new contract with new equipment with one of our customers. It is interesting to work with such a diverse range of customers, from breweries to pharmaceutical companies or nuclear facilities."

How did I get here?

"When I was doing my A-levels I wanted to find a course at university that applied the subjects I was learning and had a somewhat direct career path afterwards. Because I enjoyed chemistry and maths the most, I decided chemical engineering would be a good option for me, although I did not know much about it! I thoroughly enjoyed my degree as the real-world applications of chemical engineering are literally everywhere around us, from oil & gas refineries to food production plants! Whilst I was doing my degree, I most enjoyed the modules that involved some commercial elements, and I enjoyed the business aspects of my design project. This led me to applying to the commercial engineering graduate programme at Air Products. Here I have done 4 different roles including Sales, Hydrogen for Mobility Marketing, Strategy & Business Improvement and finally onto Asset Management. Having a breadth of commercial experience has really helped me identify what I do (and do not) like doing and what suits me best in order to pick my permanent position. I am fortunate to work for a company with strong female leadership that allow me to see potential career progression for myself and are great role models for people starting their career. With various senior leaders at Air Products having chemical engineering backgrounds it is great to see how diverse the opportunities are!"

The life I live

"Most days after work you'll find me at the gym or at netball training, I play Goal Defence for a local team and we compete in the Kingston & Surrey leagues with matches every Saturday! On a Friday and Saturday you'll probably find me at the pub with my friends or exploring new places in London having moved into my own flat last year. I also love travelling and experiencing new places and cultures, I spent a number of months travelling in my gap year and my university summers and try to visit as many places as I can using my annual leave each year!"

My typical day

"My role is largely office based with flexible working between home and the office, but also involves getting a hard hat on and going to customer sites! I’ll always start my day by checking my emails and jumping straight on any urgent issues that need sorting before doing my other tasks which might involve looking at a cash flow model with finance, leading a project update meeting with operations or calculating an annual price review. I have a mixture of tasks I do every month, such as reporting the performance of the assets or reviewing the terms of contracts that are renewing. The rest of my time is made up of being reactive to customer requests and queries, and ensuring that everything is running smoothly with the equipment, such as maintenance plans or safety inspections.
