About Ebonnie...
Who am I?
"I am a mixture of a developer, manager and trainer.Being a developer is important in my job role because it means that I am innovative and always looking for ways to improve what we are doing. It also means that I am able to work by myself or a part of the team which comes in very helpful in constriction because there is a mixture of both ways of working. A manager is motivating and good with money which works well for me because I am training to become an Estimator. This means that I will be involved in pricing jobs so will need to be able to work as part of a team and ensure that I have got all the information I need from the other people in my team. My last personality type is a trainer. I think the main trait of this is that I like to simplify things and not make them complicated. "
What do I do?
"At the moment I am a management trainee and am training to become an Estimator. I experience a variety of placements within the business to experience all the other careers and get a taste of how everything links together as well as broadening my knowledge of the industry. At the same time as this, I have just finished my HNC Construction and the Built Environment and I am starting a MSc in Construction Cost Management in September 2023. I enjoy the variety the most, every project is different and you are constantly learning. I never imagined I would be in the construction industry so it is all still new and exciting. The starting salary varies depending on experience, whether you have come straight from your A-Levels or if you have previous construction experience. "
How did I get here?
"When I left school I had no idea what I wanted to do, so I went to Sixth Form to do subjects I enjoyed and still had no idea. I ended up doing my degree because I still wasn't sure what to do and what the different opportunities were so I just picked something I enjoyed and was good at! At Uni I worked at a trampoline park when I came home for the holidays but didn't work during term time and I found out very quickly that this wasn't the right job for me.I graduated University in 2020 so I found looking for jobs very hard due to COVID. I applied for so many jobs and was constantly rejected and was getting very disheartened... During COVID I worked in Tesco for 9 months while still applying for jobs that I thought I might like. At this point I still had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do, I was applying for jobs that sounded interesting no matter what sector they were in. Eventually, I came across my current role and thought \"why not?\" so I applied for it, not knowing I'd be successful! My journey was confusing and at times disheartening, I was thinking \"why does no one want me?\". I kept changing what I thought I wanted to be, but it gave me experience in interviews and assessment days and I gained exposure to different types of people which turned out to be really useful. "
The life I live
"In my spare time I like coaching at my local judo club (I have done judo since I was 3!), I like seeing my friends especially having movie nights with lots of snacks, and I really enjoy reading. I have recently started doing Rugby and am really enjoying that! "
My typical day
"My days at work vary a lot because I am currently on a management trainee programme. This means that I do placements in different parts of the business and will get to experience a little bit of what everyone does. This is really good because it lets me understand how everything joins together and why everyone's job is so important. My placements can be in:- operations (being on site)- estimating (pricing jobs to win them)- surveying (making sure you stay on budget)- design (making sure the building can be built) - bids (creating the submissions to win the job)- finance.... the list goes on! "
