Charli Ousby
Graduate Construction Manager at ISG
About Charli...
Who am I?
"I feel like my 'personality types' fit very well for the job that I do. 'Influencer' fits as communication is vital in my role, I manage subcontractors on site so need to be able explain and allocate tasks so that the project stays on time. Quality is also a key part, there is a lot of information in construction and work needs to be completed to a high standard, so you need to have an eye for detail. As a manager I need to be organised and also be able to adapt in situations, as every day is different."
What do I do?
"I work for a main contractor in the Construction Industry so I have the opportunity to work on different projects. I have done school projects previously and I am now working on a large office refurb. My main focuses at work are keeping a project on track whilst making sure quality is at a high level as well as looking at health & safety on site. What I enjoy most is the problem solving and variability day to day. It is also great to see progress on a project and to have a finished project that you can be proud of at the end. Starting salary varies but is usually around £25-30,000 depending on qualifications you have."
How did I get here?
"I have always loved a mix of creativity and logic, at school I did Maths, Physics and Art at A levels and went on to do Architecture at University. I loved my degree but decided I would prefer a career that was less desk based and was more about physically getting things done and that is what drove me to look more in construction and project management. I went on to complete a post-grad diploma in Construction Project Management and applied to a number of graduate roles. I started at ISG in 2021 and am just coming to the end of their 2 year graduate scheme."
The life I live
"When I am not working I spend a lot of time outside walking my dog. I also have a passion for water sports and even spent a summer working in Greece as an instructor, so if I get chance (and the weather is warm!) I like to sail on the south coast."
My typical day
"Every day is different on a construction site. I work with different people and have new challenges and learn new things each day. An example of a day would be get in to site just before 8am and prepare to do the inductions for any new operatives on site. I would then get my PPE on and take a walk around site making sure it is safe, people are wearing their PPE and working safely. I would then come back to my desk and have a look over any emails that need responding to. I may have to look over some drawings or mark up progress so that I can keep track activities that are complete. The rest of my day will consist of being out on site, having coordination meetings and solving any issues that are brought up during the day. At 5pm I will normally start packing away change out of my PPE and head home."
My qualifications
"I have Maths, Physics and Art A levels, I got my BA Architecture in 2019 and my Post Graduate Diploma in Construction Project Management in 2021 just before starting my graduate role at ISG."
