About Rachael...

Who am I?

"My personality types were coach, quality controller, and trainer. I really enjoy working with others and getting the best out of the team around me, so I feel like this is a true reflection. Being in innovation I feel like the quality controller is also very relevant - challenging the ways things have always been done and trying to make improvements wherever possible. "

What do I do?

"My main role is to act as a bridge between academia and research & development and operational activities. My day-to-day activities involve understanding the challenges faced by engineers and try to find new, innovative solutions! This involves reading and summarising research outputs and connecting people working in different sectors."

How did I get here?

"I have always been passionate about climate change and being part of the solution to the current climate emergency we are facing. Working in renewables allows me to have real impact. I have always enjoyed science and maths, doing these through to A-Level. Then at university I studied Geology which allowed me to apply my love of science to better understanding the world around it. After my degree I then continued my studies and did a PhD in climate science, studying the mechanisms of carbon storage in the ocean. After my PhD to move into a job that would allow me to make more hands-on real-world change and so applied for the science & engineering graduate scheme at EDF Renewables. After completing this I then moved into my current role as Innovation Advisor."

The life I live

"In my spare time I love getting out and exploring the lake district with my dog, Scully. I also enjoy running - it gives me time and space to decompress and put things into perspective."

My typical day

"I spend most of my time at a computer, but my days are very varied. I attend technical meetings where I digest the key findings of research and try to find opportunities for new outputs to be implemented and add value to operational projects. These topics vary across a wide range of renewable technologies. A big part of my role is also getting the right people the right information at the right time. To achieve this I am always trying to build my personal network so I can connect as many dots as possible and that I have well organised documents!"
