About Maryam...

Who am I?

"I believe that campaigner, coach and manager are a good match for me as well as communicator. As a former teacher of chemistry, mathematics and general science I believe that I have a clear understanding of the fears that this age group experience and can prevent them from pursuing careers that are challenging despite their abilities. "

What do I do?

"My purpose is to engage with people, particularly middle school to young adults, and get them to explore themselves, their likes, dislikes and dreams. Coaching youngsters and involving their parents or carers for support is key to my role. My international experience as an educator/director and trainer in Saudi Arabia has proven beneficial in drawing relevant comparisons about styles of education and cultural differences which are important especially for girls but sometimes overlooked. I enjoy seeing the joy on the faces of the students when they achieve what they previously thought was only a dream."

How did I get here?

"I worked as a lab technician then studied Chemistry at undergraduate level and Analytical Chemistry for master's; seeing the outcome of reactions is what excited me about the subject. I wanted other girls to enjoy chemistry, I taught middle and high school in the UK. Teaching gave me the opportunity to travel and work in Saudi Arabia. I was teaching all girls and saw the change in uptake of chemistry as their interest and confidence increased. I enjoyed the environment in the country I taught chemistry and physics in high school and became the director. Later I set up a college counselling centre in Saudi Arabia as progression post high school is too important to overlook. Simultaneously I engaged in digital platform training for university students and faculty members. I conducted my PhD research study on STEM education and careers, focusing on Saudi Arabian girls as they presented a unique case study. Now I have my own consultancy where I mainly focus STEM education and careers."

The life I live

"Family means everything to me; we spend as much time as possible together, my schedule is set around my family.I love to travel, for work and leisure.Cooking is perhaps my favourite past-time after playing games; I do both daily.Planning conferences and international STEM outreach activities are activities that keep me engaged with a diverse range of people in all different sectors - most recently the Space Industry."
