About Hannah...
Who am I?
"My personality types are 'quality controller', 'manager' and 'influencer'. I think these fit very well with the work I do. I like to keep people safe, an good with detail and I'm trustworthy, all qualities of a quality controller. I am a good organiser and a good listener, qualities of a manager. I am also diplomatic and polite, qualities of an influencer. "
What do I do?
"I work for a Pharmaceutical company where we make medicines. I work on medicines through development where we need to make sure they are safe to be given to patients but also that they work well. Some of my work involves analysing medicines over time to check they are stable and don't go off - in a similar way to how food products have use by dates, the same is true for medicines. I need to check for things like impurities and use equipment such as chromatography to do this. I am also a supervisor so I have a team of people working with me. I really like the thought of improving people's quality of life by helping to develop medicines. "
How did I get here?
"At school I loved the idea of forensic pathology, like on Silent Witness. I decided to study Chemistry, Maths, Biology and Geography for A-level. However, I didn't want to study medicine to be a pathologist, so I initially thought forensic science instead. With this in mind I studied for a degree in Analytical Chemistry at Leeds University and then decided to stay in Leeds to do a PhD. I knew I wanted to use my analytical chemistry skills in my career and looked at lots of options, not just forensics. I saw a job advertised in a Pharmaceutical company, applied and got the job. That was 17 years ago and I have worked in analytical chemistry ever since!"
The life I live
"I have an amazing 10 year old daughter who has overcome many challenges in her life and makes me smile and inspires me every day. I am learning British Sign Language as my daughter is Deaf. "
My typical day
"I work flexibly between working from home and going onto site. I meet with my team to discuss their work, listen, help and advise them. I am mainly computer based now but I started my career in the laboratory where I analysed lots of medicines to check their quality. Some of my work involves reviewing my teams work or reports. I plan how my team will meet key milestones for the projects we are working on. I also help to write documents to be submitted to regulatory authorities like the MHRA to ask if we can run a clinical trial or market a new medicine in their country. I participate in meetings, often via video calls with colleagues in other countries. "
My qualifications
"A-level: Maths, Chemistry, Geography and AS-level Biology; MCHEM in Chemistry with Analytical Chemistry; PhD in Chemistry"
