About Paula...
Who am I?
"Influencer & Manager & Quality ControlThe skills I relate the most of my quiz results are:- Curious and detail good with details , probably due to my scientific background- Team orientated. I enjoy working with others and sharing knowledge and experience within my team- Good organizer. I love to make lists and trackers. I feel it helps my to keep track of my tasks and be more effective organising my time. "
What do I do?
"I work in different onshore wind farm projects pre and postconstruction. My main goal is to study the wind resource of a certain area and calculate the energy production of a new or existing wind farm. A key element for this calculations to be accurate are the wind measurements. Part of my job is to design measurement campaigns, finding a good location to place our sensors (anemometers, wind vanes, lidars...) to measure the real wind conditions at the future wind farm. Once the wind data is gathered and cleaned, I create a model that uses the wind resource, the terrain details (orography, topography) and the turbine model selected to calculate the wind farm production. This outputs are used to calculate the profit of a new wind farm or to check that your operational wind farm is performing as expected. I also contribute in the wind turbine model selection and the design of the wind farm layout in order to maximize the output energy of the wind farm but always taking into account all the constrains for each location (ground conditions, protected areas, forestry...)."
How did I get here?
"Probably the path I've taken to become a wind engineer hasn't been the shortest. My first job after finishing my university studies was Science Instructor at the Science Museum of Barcelona doing science workshops (electricity, maths, biology...) with young students.Afterwards I've got my first role in wind energy in a Wind Farms Control Room. I was working on shifts (including nights and weekends) and I was supervising the production and performance of wind farms in real time. I've learnt a lot about O&M of wind farms, from turbine components to regular H&S inspections or interactions with the grid operator. But the main skills I develop there was working with large data sets and multitasking. From there I moved to a energy supplier company were I used my analytical skills to forecast the energy demand of our clients and buy it in the wholesale energy market. Then I moved to the UK to join EDF Renewables initially as a performance engineer. In that role I've worked with wind farm data again, this time analysing the faults and the level of performance of the turbines. After a year I've got the opportunity to join the wind and measurement team as a wind engineer. Since my time in the control room I was really interested on wind models and energy yield assessments. It took me few years to get here and sometimes I've been a bit lost when thinking in my career. However I'm happy with the path I've taken since I've got the opportunity to learn from many different people and more important I've learnt what I like to do and which are my strengths."
The life I live
"Since I am an expat living in Scotland I like to go an explore this beautiful country in my free time. I love to go on hikes and being in the nature, however as Scottish weather can be harsh I also enjoy being at home reading crime novels."
My typical day
"As most people that works by projects I don't have a typical day as such. Usually what I try to do is decide my main tasks of the day the previous day. Once a week I need to check that the measurement devices we have installed around our future sites are sending us good data. In general I work on my side doing my analysis and I try to allocate long periods of time for that to depth focus. From time to time I have meeting with project managers to discuss inputs and characteristics of new sites or to deliver my results. Additionally, I have monthly or bi-monthly meeting with other wind engineers to share knowledge or interesting projects within us."
My qualifications
"MSc in Renewable Energies and Sustainability • Universitat de Barcelona • Barcelona (SP)Bachelor’s degree, Physics • Universitat de Barcelona • Barcelona (SP)"
