About Crystal...

Who am I?

"I completed the quiz twice to see if my results were vastly different, I wasn't surprised that manager came up both times, a relatively new team manager I have found this a steep learning curve, but one that has come naturally and allowed me to grow and develop with my strengths. I have always been a positive person who likes to motivate others to be organised, motivated and a team player.I was surprised to see Innovator as the personality type, as I've never felt like this was a strength, however as I looked further at the aspects of being confident, understanding the customer, good at taking charge and influencing I can see more of what I recognise my personality.I believe you take the best (and worst) of your personality types into each role you do, and have to use these to advantage to be successful. If there are things you don't like doing, either practice in safe environments, or find ways to adapt situations to make these easier. An example would be, I don't like presenting to large groups, however I have found in certain forums this is easier with a sympathetic audience, also the topic you are presenting on can make a massive difference if you are super confident about it."

What do I do?

"I manage a team of Commissioning engineers. Our role in the project is to ensure the process plant has been built to the engineering design and intent. This involves confirmation of construction, testing of the equipment either for the first time, or repeat of a factory test to confirm no change since its shipping. Once this is completed, safety critical control checks are required to ensure the safety of the facility prior to start up. My team is also responsible to start the equipment and facility, so ensuring this is done safely and in control is essential. The challenge in this team is ramping up the personnel to support all the projects which are looking at Commissioning & Start Up in the coming months. The team was previously around 6-8 people, and will need to be around 40 by the end of 2021. In addition to the recruitment and onboarding, having work process in place to support consistent activities with a team coming from different backgrounds and industries is a massive challenge.I enjoy being an advocate for change, making change to the work process and trying to drive changes through a project / organisation. I really enjoy a mixture of office and site work, and have found now with several of my roles within Air Products working on office based activities but then seeing and implementing them at site through Projects or Commissioning it gives me the satisfaction of making a difference. The past 18 months of no travel with COVID has been a massive change as I’ve never been so long only working in the ‘office’ in my career. However I’m also super proud of my team who has continued to support the organisation travelling internationally throughout the pandemic and bringing many plants onstream during this time."

How did I get here?

"I started at Air Products in 2007. I joined after spending a few years working for a Chemicals and then Oil and Gas company as a Process Engineer, taking a year off working for an active holiday company where i learnt to ski, snowboard, windsurf and sail. I joined Air Products as a Process Systems Engineer, being involved with industrial gases and small hydrgogen plant design. I decided to move to Operations to get closer to site activities. I spent 6 years in Operations as Project Manager, before leaving to join the Jazan Project. I was the Flawless Programme Manager for the Jazan Project, and worked closely with the Commissioning team, which enabled my next step into EMEA Commissioning Manager. I have now been in this role over 3 years and additionally the Global Functional Owner of the Commissioning & Start Up. I have always been inspired by seeing change and modification in action in the field / operations."

The life I live

"I play (field) hockey and have done since I was 11. I love most sports and have completed in triathlons including a half ironman, swam the channel in a 4 person female relay team, a marathon, and next will be a biking challenge. I enjoy walking, and have trekked in India, Peru, and hoping to get my two boys into hiking by walking up Snowden in a couple of months time."

My typical day

"A typical day would depend on whether I'm in the office or at site. In the office there are many meetings with site and project teams to determine plant status, issues with commissioning activities, upcoming challenges as well as travel arrangements and rotation challenges. Additionally I will attend many meetings, regarding estimating cost for new proposals, developing new ways to do work, or training / educating other groups on the activities required during the Commissioning phase of a process gases project.A typical day on site will involve walking the process plant, confirming checks are being completed by the team to ensure it is built to the P&ID (Process and Instrument Diagram) or electrical diagram. Reviewing checks that have been completed in order to approve next steps of commissioning activities which may involve live power, or process gases. I have been lucky enough to travel to many Air Products sites including, UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, US, China, India. I've not seen as much of the local countryside as I might have liked, but many airports, hotels and motorways!"
