About Becky...
Who am I?
"The personality types fit with my role as it can be very varied.Co-ordinator – I am responsible for several update programs across our plants in Europe which require the skills listed for a co-ordinator. You need to be organised and pro-active with communication as everyone is busy so it is important to make sure you are clear in what you are asking people to do and when you need it by. I have been with Air Products for a long time and I like helping people find information on old plants or with understanding how to use the design tools. I was helped by a lot of passionate engineers when I started and I like to pass it forward.Influencer - I mentor and coach people so have developed ways of explaining things over the years, it did not come naturally. I like to use pictures and sketches. I enjoy working on my own and in a team - I like that I have both in my job as variety is important to me and you learn a lot from other people but I also like problem solving and calculations on my own.Manager – I like to get people together to solve issues, it is quicker than e-mails and makes sure everyone has been included and has ownership of the decisions made. It is important to keep records though.\""
What do I do?
"I am part of a team responsible for supporting the engineers who keep the production plant safe and running efficiently. I work with people all over Europe and in India which I really enjoy. I wish I was better at languages. I approve designs for plant improvements."
How did I get here?
"I started with Air Products as a graduate over 25 years ago. After the graduate scheme, I worked in Research & Development (R&D) on patents looking as efficiently generating power while removing the carbon dioxide. It is good to see the technology now being utilised. I then worked in the process group working on proposals for new plants. This was really enjoyable as you saw the big picture and it felt great when we were awarded a contract. After having my kids, I came back part time working in the detailed design group as the hours were more predictable and constant. Three years ago, I moved to Operations which I enjoy as I am learning new skills while still using the knowledge and experience I have gained."
The life I live
"I have two teenage daughters and I have been lucky enough to be able to work part-time while they were growing up which is really important to me.I like watching sport especially rugby. I am part of a group encouraging people to use less single use plastic, my degree/job means I can explain the terms used on packaging and what the impact of plastic waste means. I am dyslexic so I am probably not the best person to ask me for directions!"
My typical day
"First I check my calendar to see what meetings I have that day and make sure I am prepared for them. I drink coffee. I read my emails. I answer any easy/quick ones right away so I don't forget. I then deal with any urgent issues, preferably by talking to the person involved to check I have all the information and I have correctly understood what is required. I add any work requirements to my to do list. I try to block out time to check calculations as it is easy to miss things if you are not fully focused. I drink more coffee.I typically have a couple of review meetings per day catching up with individual engineers to go through up coming workor to review work in progress. If it is a coaching session, I try to keep it short as it can be tiring for both parts especially on-line.Other meetings are multi-discipline where we review a change, these are really good as you get everyone's input and feed off each other's ideas and experience."
