About Jessica...
Who am I?
"Overall, I think these are all a good fit. Campaigner: I'm always looking at ways to support things I care about, including diversity and inclusion within the workplace, and outreach activities in the community.Influencer: I often use my influencing skills to get people to work together for the greater good overall, achieving successful projects.Manager: I would see myself more as a leader than a manager. I love seeing people grow and flourish, and supporting them on their journey. This helps to build a strong, competent and motivated work team. "
What do I do?
"I ensure that all of our equipment is running, and tackle any breakdowns that happen. I organise preventative maintenance, to try to prevent unexpected breakdowns. I also review how efficient our equipment is, and make changes to improve the efficiency. I ensure that our site is safe, and compliant with relevant laws and regulations. I enjoy the problem solving aspect of my job the most. Our equipment is complex and breakdowns can sometimes occur - whether it’s a little issue which takes half an hour to resolve, or a longer project which can take months to solve, I feel like I’m making a real difference! "
How did I get here?
"I grew up in Bexley, London, and went to an all girls school. I hadn’t considered a career in engineering, or even heard of chemical engineering until I attended a “What is Chem Eng?” session when I was 17. Two employees of GSK inspired me so much and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them giving up their time to present at my school; consequently, I’m passionate about outreach, as I know first-hand the difference it can make to someone’s life. I then studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Manchester, including a placement year at Mondelez International within coffee research and development. The year was really beneficial in giving me an understanding of “real world” applications of chemical engineering and potential future careers. After I graduated, I joined the Air Products graduate scheme, and moved through 4 roles in the company before starting my current position. I have been inspired by several people, but most notably, I would say that seeing Roma Agrawal give a talk at the British Motor Museum many years ago was an experience that has really stuck with me. Roma Agrawal has worked on several major engineering projects, including the Shard in London, which she designed the section top of. I remember thinking that it was an amazing achievement, and proof that if you want something, you should work hard and have the confidence to ask for it. "
The life I live
"I am a Girlguiding Brownie leader; I currently run a Brownie unit which I’ve done for the past 5 years. The weekly meetings are 1 hour, but I also have to plan for the meetings which including preparing risk assessments, planning activities, purchasing materials, attending wider regional meetings and communicating with parents. It is incredibly rewarding to teach the girls new skills and see their expressions light up when they successfully complete a challenge. I also enjoy being active and keeping fit. I regularly run 5k and have recently joined a local running club. I also enjoy bouldering both indoors and outdoors. I find bouldering to be a perfect mix of exercise, socialising and problem solving, which really appeals to me. I set up an Air Products bouldering club, organising regular trips to local climbing walls. I have always enjoyed learning and travelling, and throughout my life I’ve regularly tried my hand at new things, whether that be musical instrument, sports or crafting. I’m a strong believer that my varied experiences and passion for seeing new places helps to increase my knowledge and make me a better, more rounded person. When I was 19, I spent 3 months in Canada working at a Salvation Army summer camp. It was an amazing experience, I worked incredibly hard but had great colleagues and we had a lot of fun. It was also a very rewarding experience, as many the children had free or heavily subsidised places, and their family wouldn’t have been able to afford to send them to summer camp otherwise, and therefore their week with us was the highlight of their summer, and we put full effort into making it the best week we possibly could. "
My typical day
"I am the deputy plant manager at Air Products largest liquid manufacturing site in the UK, which separates nitrogen, oxygen and argon from the air, and ships it out to customers in road tankers. We supply many industries including hospitals, food manufacturers and chemical companies. My job varies every day, some days I spend the whole day at my computer, replying to emails and updating technical paperwork. Other days, I spend the whole day outside, overseeing the work being carried out by the teams on site, reviewing the condition of equipment on the plant or planning process isolations to allow us to work on a certain piece of equipment, while the rest of the equipment keeps running. Usually, my days are a mix of both being at my desk and out on site. My aim is to keep the plant running efficiently and safely. "
