Lucie Hayward

UKI Principal EHS Officer at Air Products

LGBTQ+ Role Model
My best advice is not to think that life is prescribed and make whatever decision feels right for you in that moment, even if it feels far away from what you had planned. If someone recognises your potential and suggests a career move for you, then trust them and the opportunities will be endless.

About Lucie...

Who am I?

"My personality types are a good match. The focus of my current role is to support and guide the business with safety based decisions so I try to bring reason and logic to discussions along with empathy to make sure that individuals know what safety means to them."

What do I do?

"Being in the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Team means that you are part of the most important focus for the whole business. I get to be involved closely with Engineering, Production and Distribution activities and the people that do them. This is a great way to see and appreciate all that happens within the organisation and help to ensure that everyone remains safe whilst going about their role. Everyday is a learning opportunity for me too as I interact with so many people in the organisation."

How did I get here?

"After University I started with Air Products as a temp whilst working out what to do with my life. That was 20 years ago! My first full time role was as Team Leader of a Customer Service Team and since then I have worked on Projects in Continuous Improvement, been the Manager of an Industrial Gas & Acetylene Plant, been the Operations Support Manager simplifying and standardising equipment & processes across our sites and been the Cylinder Asset Manager. I was part of the Customer Engineering Management Team, managing Workshops and Warehouses that supply parts and equipment to the Industrial Gases and Global Operations business. Now I am in the Field EHS Team; providing guidance and support to all business groups as they make safety critical decisions. I'm surrounded by experts in their field every day and each of them inspire me to want to learn something new"

The life I live

"In my spare time I love to be out in the countryside walking and climbing mountains. Summiting Kilimanjaro is my greatest achievement so far."

My typical day

"My days are very varied. One day I can be at my desk writing up a Risk Assessment for a new task and the next, be at one of our operational sites helping with a Safety Audit. I might deliver safety training to employees in Scotland and then be assisting a site manager in Didcot with implementing new procedures based on the latest legal guidance. Being part of a Team that supports the UK, Ireland and Norway means that there is always somewhere where our support is needed!"

My qualifications

"I have BA in Classics from the University of Reading and am currently looking to complete a NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety."
