About Rachel...
Who am I?
"The personality types match well, Developer, Influencer, Quality Controller. I like to make things better to make life easier - so the Developer fits this really well. I like to get people to do things my way - hence the Influencer. In Quality you need people to follow the processes and procedures, so that fits well. And the Quality Controller - I love things to be organised and done right so this is spot on, therefore being involved in Quality is a perfect match."
What do I do?
"I really enjoy engaging with colleagues at our various sites and helping them improve what they do. Finding clever, and sometimes a simple solutions to make things better, is really rewarding. For me that is the great thing about quality and engineering - the improvement element. "
How did I get here?
"During my A Levels I attended an 'Insight' course for girls interested in engineering. This is when I knew mechanical engineering was for me. I attended The University of Bristol and achieved a first class masters degree in Mechanical Engineering & Process Systems. I started my career on the British Steel Graduate Engineering Programme and became Environmental Technologist at the Llanwern Steelworks . I then worked for Renishaw, a metrology company, as a Quality Engineer. Around this time I achieved my Chartered Engineer status. Since then I have had the opportunity to build my experience by working for a number of companies and held various roles, including Development Engineer, project managing multi-million pound projects at The Bristol Port Company, following a career break I joined Bureau Veritas as a Technical Skills Manager and was also their UK Accreditation Manager. I then moved to SGS UK Ltd working as the QHSE Manager before joining Air Products in 2021 as Quality Systems Manager UK & Ireland. "
The life I live
"Much of my spare time is taken up with looking after my two boys and taking them to their extra curriculum activities. I enjoy renovating my home and creating artwork to decorate it. I do a lot of crafting activities making cards and gifts. "
My typical day
"A normal day consists of talking to the Quality and Operation teams, attending meetings and answering emails. All of this is related to making sure that the regulations and standards are maintained so that the plants can continue to operate. When things go wrong I go into problem solving mode - reviewing how activities are done and how they can be improved. I am working on three key projects; obtaining the Health & Safety standard certification (ISO 45001), obtaining the Social Responsibility standard (ISO 26000) and implementing a quality management tool in the UK called Quasydoc."
My qualifications
"A-Levels (Maths, Physics, Art)Masters in Mechanical Engineering & Process SystemsCharted Mechanical Engineer"
