About Caitlin...

Who am I?

"Coach - Understanding and listening to people, and being able to build relationships is crucial in my role. Creativity goes a long way. I am an open and honest person and always try to share my experiences with others.Developer - Being an engineer is always about searching for a better way to bring value to customers and the company. A willingness to learn and a talent for solving problems will help you make the most out of opportunities that come your way.Quality controller - Safety is one of the biggest focuses at National Grid, for good reason. Attention to detail is important, and you must be aware of the risks involved in everything you do. Being trustworthy and fair helps us do the right thing."

What do I do?

"I am a power systems engineer with the electricity system operator for Great Britain. Our role is to move high voltage electricity from where it’s generated through the energy system to keep homes and businesses supplied with essential energy. The control room operates 24/7 to balance supply and demand on a second-by-second basis. My team works to support those working in the control room, providing them with advice and information. We also run investigations when faults happen, and look at how processes can be improved. This allows the control room to keep focused and make sure power keeps following! My favourite part of my job is being directly involved in the transition to net zero and knowing that I'm making a difference to the world we live in.The starting salary for a Masters graduate entry is £30,000."

How did I get here?

"I studied engineering at university, where I became involved in a society called Engineering For Change which runs international and local sustainability projects. I was on the committee as secretary and became involved in running lots of events and fundraising. I spent a summer volunteering with a charity in Romania teaching underprivileged kids basic science principles through engineering workshops. I also led a team for a project building a small scale wind turbine! In my final year I took classes including power electronics and power systems engineering. This led me to doing an internship in the renewable energy sector and now I have my dream job in such an exciting company!"

The life I live

"Most of my spare time (and money) is spent going to the theatre! I love musicals and go to see as many as I can. I also read a lot of books and enjoy cooking and baking. I exercise by running, kickboxing and playing badminton."

My typical day

"The first thing I do in the morning is to read the status report from the control room, which gives an overview of what happened the day before. Then we have a daily team meeting to discuss any important issues from the report and check in on team projects. Throughout the rest of the day I work with other team members on various tasks including managing our inbox, reporting on weekly key performance indicators, collating articles and responding to customers. I also need to stay on top of my emails and try to keep up to date with what's going on in the company by checking the news on the intranet homepage. As I am on the graduate programme I attend lots of training, from technical subjects to first aid and mental wellbeing. I spend a few hours every month volunteering my time for the events planning team in the Women in National Grid employee resource group."
