About Tracy...
Who am I?
"I am definitely a Coach and a Developer, so the personality type quiz was spot on! I definitely enjoy working with people and I love to ensure they have what they need to be able to do their job. I support my team to deliver what we need to and I will chatter on for hours about the fact I love my job and why I think what my company does is literally crucial to each and every one of our customers!"
What do I do?
"I started out life as a secondary school teacher - and never imagined that one day I would leave teaching and be working for a water company. But here I am, almost 17 years later, and I still love what I do. I work in the Education team at Thames Water, as part of a team of 5 people, and we work with schools and community groups across the Thames Water area to help young people understand what we do and how we do it. As part of that we visit schools, have schools visit us at our Education centres, and we encourage our employees to support our work through volunteering with us on our schools programme."
How did I get here?
"As a former teacher, I have worked in education roles in business, in the charity sector and in the museum and heritage sectors during my working life so far. When I left formal teaching, lots of people said to me, 'well what are you going to do if you aren't a teacher?' I am happy to say that although I do still get the chance to deliver teaching sessions to young people as part of my career journey, the fact I trained as a teacher and then left the classroom, hasn't been a barrier at all. In fact, the transferable skills I developed during my teaching career have been the reason I have been successful in all the roles I have been lucky enough to be able to call my jobs. Communication skills, team work skills, managing budgets, managing staff, project management - these are all the skills I honed whilst teaching, on top of the actual teaching stuff! I have always kept an open mind when progressing in my career, and never let anyone assume that due to my qualifications or my current role, that there isn't something even more brilliant and unexpected round the corner. I mean, people laugh when I say I never imagined working on a sewage treatment works....but it is never boring and I love working for an organisation that provides the essential service for all our customers every single day."
The life I live
"I am a working parent, which is something I am fiercely proud of. There are sacrifices to be made in a number of areas to be able to work and manage childcare and family life. It hasn't been without its challenges over the years. But juggling both things is ultimately hugely rewarding and gives my children a good role model to aspire to. In my spare time, I love to exercise as it is crucial for both my body and mind. "
My typical day
"The most fantastic thing about working for Thames Water is the fact that not one day is the same. My working time is split between being in one of our education centres, and delivering tours and workshops on our sewage works for school age children, and going into schools (or delivering virtual workshops in the Covid era) or managing our online programme of resources. In addition, our team work across the business with employee volunteers, helping them to get out into our schools and community groups to disseminate our company messages, and we work across internal teams within the business to manage our programme of education activities. I do also spend time at my laptop answering emails - doesn't everyone!"
My qualifications
"I have three A Levels, in History, Politics and English Literature and a 2:1 degree in History with English. I also have a Postgraduate teaching qualification (PGCE) in History."
