About Zaira...
Who am I?
"The personality types Developer, Influencer and Manager all have aspects that feel familiar. Developer is the most relatable, being creative, flexible and practical, and a problem solver. These skills are often required for my role at events with the need to think quickly and problem solve during high pressure moments. I have a 'can do' attitude and often come up with ways of making things possible or overcoming hurdles in a project. I'm not afraid to suggest ideas or negotiate with others to come up with a solution. This ties in with the influencer personality type. Working on events involves working both individually and in a team, and it's therefore important to ensure everyone is aware of plans and happy to play their part. I have experience of managing project teams from across an organisation to achieve certain goals and I enjoy this type of management."
What do I do?
"I've recently moved to the Strategic Programs team at Thames Water as an Operational Improvement Lead. Our team works on different project across the business to provide a range of efficiencies. My recent work has focused on looking at ways of sending less rag (rubbish like wetwipes that is taken out of the sewage process before it's treated) to landfill and maybe even in future turning it into a source of energy. I am quite environmentally minded so working on this type of project is personally quite satisfying that I could make a difference in helping to reduce the companies carbon footprint. Before this I was working with the Education Team at Thames Water to coordinate our volunteers from across the business visiting schools. Our volunteers might be supporting a careers workshop or giving a talk on water efficiency. The aim is to create good habits with the customers of the future or get them interested in working in the water industry. Since starting I've focused on how we record our data and as part of this managing and building our database to better meet our needs. I've quite enjoyed remembering my A-level coding skills! I was also working with the Recreation and Access team, who look after our nature reserves and open spaces, organising London Open House where members of the public get to go behind the scenes of some of our historic sites. It's true to say working at Thames Water has it's challenges especially given all the press attention but there is lots of good work that goes on behind the scenes which often doesn't get a mention. The supportive colleagues I work with and the flexibility around family life is certainly a real positive."
How did I get here?
"I've always had an interest in events and have been involved in helping at the London Marathon from quite a young age, going on to paid employment once a year. This experience meant I went to university knowing I had an interest in organising events and project management but didn't want to study Event Management as it felt to focused and might narrow my options. Instead I studied Business Law and Public Relations - my main reason for choosing the course was on the basis of a placement year where I could get industry experience. I had a number of offers for this year and decided to work for a PR agency in London and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Once I graduated I got a role working for the National Trust at a property in Berkshire. It was really enjoyable and offered lots of opportunity to develop skills, everything from managing budgets to planning weddings and speaking to visitors. Following this I moved to work in a more senior role working for the Local Wildlife Trust overseeing their events programme and working on any large scale projects including the AGM, a wildlife festival and our appearance at BBC Countryfile Live. I needed a change and decided to look for a role in a different sector which led me to work for Thames Water. My more recent move was my desire to further develop my project management skills and it's been a bit of a learning curve so far!"
The life I live
"I'm quite an outdoors person, we live next to the canal and spend lots of time around the water. We have several animals including dogs, chickens and alpacas. I recently made it to the top of Mount Snowden, something I've wanted to do for a while since missing out on a school trip, and although it was cloudy from the summit it was a great day of walking. I'm quite a creative thinker and like practical tasks a number of new ones I've learnt as part of renovating our house, laying the kitchen floor and fitting the majority of a new kitchen are the two achievements of which I'm most proud."
My typical day
"My role is very varied and no two days are the same. Tasks could include going to site to check on the progress of a project to leading an update meeting. I work in a hybrid fashion which means I get to visit a number of different office sites for meetings as well as working from home. This works really well for me alongside family life and Thames Water allows me to have a good work life balance."
My qualifications
"I studied A Levels in Biology, Geography and Computing. My degree is in Business Law and Public Relations and I got a First Class honours."
