About Janice...
Who am I?
"The quiz results show that I'm a Influencer, Manager, and Quality Controller. I think the results matches very closely with my personality. I am good at understanding requirements from clients and from technical manuals. I can digest the details and explain them to my team members by breaking difficult concepts down into simpler packages that are more manageable. I'm self-motivated and am able to share my enthusiasm with my team. I set clear targets for project delivery and review compliance. At the same time, I am open to new ideas and am willing to explore new delivery methods. I trust that the team can deliver high quality output with appropriate resources but am also confident to point out any deviations and suggest methods to rectify. I do not accept deliverables that are below quality despite pressing schedules.I'm good at detecting emerging risks but sometimes, I can be too risk adverse. I am curious and always seek to learn. I am not very good at breaking bad news and am now looking for training to improve it. I can be stubborn with my plans but am happy to adapt should there be evidence showing other methods work better."
What do I do?
"My role as an Assistant Project Manager (PM) is to lead the delivery of projects such that outputs that fits the needs of clients can be developed on time, at the right quality, and within budget. I liaise with the client and end-users to understand their objectives. This is to get an idea of their expected output, budget, timescale. It is the job of a Project Manager to discuss their objectives and recommend possible solutions.Once the time, costs, and quality are agreed, I identify the specialists needed to product the deliverables. This involves speaking to senior managers and resources managers to search for available staff internally. When we have everyone on-board, a kick-off meeting will be held to brief the newly formed team. I then provide an outline of activities required in form of a work breakdown structure (WBS) and invite specialists to input the estimated number of hours required to complete each task. Using the WBS, I develop a project schedule using Microsoft Project to show task dependencies and allow progress tracking. I also budget the resources required based on the hours estimated in the WBS and profile the invoicing plan based on the schedule.Once the initiation phase is completed, I check in with team members through regular progress meetings and compile a project log to report progress to clients. I manage changes to scope with Early Warning Notices and Compensation Events. I also meet with Senior Project Managers at regular intervals to perform progress evaluations, ensuring project health and quality.I enjoy my job as I’m allowed to be in the driving seat of the project. I see myself bring positive changes for the client through utilising my planning and leadership skills. I started as a Graduate Project Manager (PM) and have been promoted to an Assistant PM. The Graduate PM starting salary is approx. £28,400."
How did I get here?
"Whilst I was training to be an aerospace engineer at university, I found myself not as interested to the technical details of various concepts as my coursemates were. I questioned myself, is engineering the right choice for me? I do love engineering, just not the very fine details of aerodynamic principles! Then along came a project where we had to design, test, and build an aluminium wing for a client (our professors). As part of that module, we were provided a lecture of project management. That's when all clicked, I realised how I would fit into the industry! I always loved to oversee processes from a higher level and coordinate the delivery rather than getting too hands-on. I took the initiative to lead this team of 35 from understanding the clients requirements, chairing meetings, forming smaller functional disciplines, breaking down tasks and allocating them to various disciplines. The project was a success and I enjoyed being a project manager. From that point, I started to look into the career profile of a project manager, considered the future demand, and researched what it takes to become one."
The life I live
"Previously I was training to be a pilot, and therefore spent some time in Australia before landing in the UK. Unfortunately, the weather in UK is unfavourable for for visual flying rating training so I have called for a pause.I go hiking or solo exploration in my spare time. I like woodlands and caves. I love photography, and my themes are nature, animals, and architecture. "
My typical day
"First thing in the morning, I will check emails and schedule my tasks for the day. From the morning to early afternoon, I will attend and sometimes chair both internal and external meetings, liaise with stakeholders including clients, designers, engineers, and architects. In the afternoon until the end of the day, I will complete tasks independently e.g. planning a delivery programme, budgeting and resourcing for the project, invoice the client. Occasionally, I also have the opportunity to attend CPD (continuing professional development) events, where I commit to early career and professional training."
My qualifications
