About Laura...

Who am I?

"I feel the personality traits Coach, Manager, Quality Controller, match me very well. I am an extroverted person; I love working in a team and leading people to a common goal or solution to a problem. I am a forward planner which I think plays into the quality control aspect of my personality. Engineers are usually mathematically minded problem solvers where collaboration with others is crucial for completing projects."

What do I do?

"My job mainly revolves around technical design work, using Air Products engineering tools and my engineering knowledge, to bid for contracts to design and build plants. During the past year I have worked on a new large air separation plant project in Ukraine, where process engineering takes care of most aspects of engineering design and specification. "

How did I get here?

"I completed a Chemical Engineering Master’s Degree with an Industrial Placement at the University of Surrey. After 3 years of study, I went to work for a year at AkzoNobel, Dulux Paint then returned to university to complete a master’s year. While studying I also completed various summer placements at chemical companies. Following university, I was given a place on the Air Products' Graduate scheme for 3, year-long rotations. I was first placed in the Liquid Bulk Supply Chain where I was responsible for parts of weekly demand planning, future sales, and operations planning and variance to plan analysis for our liquid bulk scheduling and deliveries across Europe. For my second role, I worked as a Project Engineer in the Large-scale Operations Projects. During this role I had to understand project scope, oversee projects successfully by planning work and use effective communication with relevant engineering parties and stakeholders. I was responsible for project completion, budgeting, and contractor communication. During my final year on the graduate scheme I worked as a process engineer. This role involved technical design work with the use of Air Products engineering tools being responsible for work such as column design and specifications, line sizing and valve validations. I have recently secured a permanent position within Air Products as an Operations Project Engineer in Ireland. "

The life I live

"In my spare time I love to do fantasy make-up and nail art. Being a female engineer there is often pressure to become a more masculine version of yourself and shy away from things like make-up, hair etc but I enjoy it as my creative outlet. My friends and I have done everything from full drag to different types of pokemon looks and I love to create all kind of detailed art on my nails. Outside of work I also play lacrosse and rock climb. It's great to have non-work hobbies."

My typical day

"My current role is a process engineer which involves the design and specification of engineering equipment in Air Products plants that are yet to be built. I use engineering tools and software which allow me to model something like a valve. As a process engineer within our Global Engineering business area, I am working on new plants requested by customers that make, for example, 100 tonnes of nitrogen a day. We model and specify pieces of equipment before buying them to make sure we pick the right size, material, temperatures, and pressures, to build a safe plant that operates how we want. My job is currently all office based with potential to travel to the sites where the new plants are installed. My past roles at Air Products have also allowed me to travel to various parts of Europe and the UK to oversee projects or take part in meetings and training."

My qualifications

"A-levels: Chemistry, Maths, Business Studies, DanceChemical Engineering Masters Degree with Industrial Placement"
