About Charlotte...

Who am I?

"The personality types suit me well, as I'm organised and logical in the tasks I complete at work. I coordinate and manage others through my work, particularly when I visit construction sites and give instructions to others. It's important to be detail oriented in the work I do, particularly when producing structural designs, which fits with the description of a quality controller. I mostly work within a team, and therefore both the coordinator personality type and the manager personality type fit this, since it's important to listen to others and encourage discussion in the team. "

What do I do?

"I design infrastructure for ports, harbours and shipyards around the world. The structures I design and analyse include quay walls, dry docks, floating pontoons, and berths. I work with both concrete and steel structures, and the structures I design are suitable for all different uses, from smaller boats all the way up to ferries and large container ships. The designs I help to produce are constructed to allow ports, harbours and shipyards to operate effectively. The part I enjoy most is seeing designs come to life when I have site visits. I also enjoy this part because it gets me outside, away from the office, so my job is not fully desk based. The starting salary for a graduate engineer is around £25,000."

How did I get here?

"Following my degree, I started as a Graduate Civil Maritime Engineer with Royal HaskoningDHV in 2018. From there, I've worked on different projects with different teams, and progressed to being a Civil Maritime Engineer in the company. "

The life I live

"I enjoy playing badminton, cooking, reading books and walking outdoors . I also sit on the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) Graduate and Student committee in the North East, networking with and organising events for other civil engineers in the North East who are in the early stages of their career."

My typical day

"When I'm in the office, I start the day looking through my emails and the list of tasks I have for the day. I usually have a few meetings scheduled for the day, either with project teams internally or with external clients. It's important for me to prepare for these, to pay attention and to take notes during them. In between meetings, I will be completing design work, using structural modelling programmes, coordinating drawings with technicians, or writing reports for the projects I am working on. I also have project management tasks to complete, including looking at budgets and forecasts for projects, and writing reports to communicate progress with others. When I'm on site, there's a lot of time spent on my feet, talking with different people and coordinating activities. It's important for me to consider both health and safety, and quality control during time I spend supervising projects."

My qualifications

"I studied AS-levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Spanish, Further Maths, and A-levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry.I then went to Imperial College London, and studied for a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a Year Abroad. For my year abroad, I spent a year studying in Madrid. Following university, I started as a Graduate Engineer with Royal HaskoningDHV."
