About Charlotte...

Who am I?

"I think that my personality types from the quiz match well in different ways for me. My first result is \"Campaigner\", which fits with my job role as I have to ensure that everyone working on ships achieve what they set out to, keeping things organised and running on time. As I have to communicate with lots of different groups of people, my communication has to be clear and precise. I am also passionate and driven about the work I do, and I hope that rubs off on other people! My second match is \"influencer\" which I think links well with my \"soft skills\". I work often alone but sometimes I lead teams to complete work on a ship, and we sometimes run into issues where an \"outside the box\" solution may be required - these decisions may need to be made fast! I have to be diplomatic and communicate clearly as I work with lots of different groups of people (customers, suppliers etc) to avoid mistakes. As part of my role I conduct inspections which means that I have to be thorough and conduct my checks in detail. My third match is \"explorer\", and the following areas are where I agree most with this match:•\tWhen there are issues on ships I like to take the initiative to investigate and understand the cause of the issue and put together a plan to solve the problem - this happens a lot in my role! This also involves bringing in subject matter experts where required and co-ordinating their activities from an overall plan and involvement from other parties to ensure we arrive at a good solution.•\tI am often working alone in my role and act as the link from design to real/physical equipment so I have to have a practical approach to my work and consider what may happen when drawings of equipment get manufactured and made a reality. I think that \"influencer\" and \"explorer\" match my role the best, and describe the technical and non-technical parts of my role pretty well."

What do I do?

"As an Installation Manager I am responsible for making sure that when our equipment arrives at the ship:•\tNone of it is missing•\tAdvising how it should be put on the ship and how it should be fitted•\tInspecting the equipment and confirming that it is safe to switch on•\tMaking sure that once it is switched on, our equipment all works as it should do•\tMaking sure that the customer is happy with their equipment•\tAdvising customers/suppliers on any issues that come upI am also involved in the design of the equipment, long before it arrives at the ship. This means I get to be involved in lots of different areas of the engineering process.I really enjoy working with different groups of people in my role. I have met so many people and they have taught me a lot, which makes me a better engineer. I also get to travel in the UK and also abroad. I like that I have the flexibility of working alone and also leading teams, and I enjoy having variable work such as on design but also on the real-life equipment.Entry-level graduate engineer roles start on £27,000."

How did I get here?

"At GCSE, I studied Maths, Science and Electronics - then at A Level I took Systems & Control (Design & Technology) and Maths. I used these subjects to get onto an Engineering degree at university. I also did the Engineering Education Scheme during my A Levels and mentored GCSE CREST projects. I highly recommend getting involved in these, it was a great experience!I decided to do a Sandwich degree at university, so after year 2 I worked for a year and then came back to do year 3 of your degree. In my third year I applied for an internship (a fixed term 12 month job) at Thales as a Systems Integration and Test Engineer. I really enjoyed this role, so I came back to Thales when I graduated as a graduate Systems Integration and Test Engineer. I got the chance to work on different projects in different places and eventually got a Team Leader role, which then turned into my current role as Installation Manager."

The life I live

"I like to stay active and enjoy many different types of activity. I have been horse riding from a young age as my mum was a horse riding instructor, and still regularly ride. I mainly enjoy dressage, show jumping and fun rides in the countryside. I am a huge animal lover and have 2 cats; both showing that they are enjoying me currently working from home!Around 5 years ago I learnt how to snowboard at Chill Factore in Manchester, where I worked part-time during my degree studies. I have enjoyed holidays in European Alps (until 2019)! I enjoy running, yoga and going to the gym where I do group classes. Occasionally I go swimming or indoor climbing for variety and appreciate the puzzle element to this activity.I would describe myself as a \"foodie\" and love to try new things. I love to cook and try to make most things from scratch, with varying amounts of success! Like a lot of people I tried my hand at baking though lockdown. I also love to travel which I think matches well with my love of food - I try to do a cooking class when I go on holiday to a new location. These are almost always one of the highlights of the trip and often the best dishes. It is a great way to get to know local people and other travellers – I have made friends from the USA, Australia, Germany and Iceland. So far I have done cooking courses in Italy, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Thailand. I love to visit new places and am interested in venturing on horse riding expeditions abroad when restrictions allow!"

My typical day

"Like a lot of people at the moment, I am working from home. In the morning I log on and check my emails then start on any tasks that I have to do - this could be planning work on ships, looking at quotes/prices/orders from suppliers, talking to customers, discussing any issues with the team or figuring out a way to solve a problem. Sometimes I have meetings with my team and occasionally I go into the office for these if I need to.Sometimes, I have to work away from home (at the ship). In this case I would be staying in a hotel and drive to the dockyard (where the ships are), where we normally have a morning meeting to plan the work for the day and then I make sure that the team have what they need to do their work, and keep the work organised. If the customer needs anything throughout the day then they will get in touch with me, so if they have any questions then I will start investigating these for them. During the day I also make sure that any work is done safely and make sure that our team have got access to the correct areas or PPE (personal protective equipment, like hard hat, boots, gloves etc.) that they might need. I keep a record of everything that is done so that we can provide evidence to whoever requires it that a task has been completed. I do STEM work too so sometimes I go into schools to run fun sessions for the students which helps to teach them about electronics."
