Lead Condition Monitoring Engineer at RWE Generation UK
Don’t be put off by the cliché of being an Engineer, it’s not always about nuts and spanners (although nothing wrong with that). As long as you have the curiosity, drive and determination, you can also be a good Engineer.
About Yan...
Who am I?
"My work involves identifying and solving engineering problems so it is no surprise that my personality is a mixture of influencer and quality controller. It is scary how accurate the attributes reflect my personality. I have to be good at finding and reviewing information, think outside the box, thorough and reliable, good with details, proactive and explaining my finding so that people can understand. It must be the natural quality controller in me that makes me extra curious which is why I love what I do and reaching that golden nugget at the end of each investigation."
What do I do?
"Monitor the condition of both rotating (gas turbines, pumps) and non-rotating (pipes, valves) equipment. Identifying potential issues early can prevent breakdowns and in some cases catastrophic failures with the potential to cause injuries. I really enjoy the problem solving part of my job, it feels so good after solving a difficult issue and there's never a dull moment. The starting salary for a graduate is £30k."
How did I get here?
"I was fortunate enough to get a job with RWE whilst I was still doing my Mechanical Engineering degree at university. I worked for them for a year as part of the year in industry scheme. The working year really opened my eyes and prepared me for what life would be like after university. I really enjoyed working in the engineering and the energy sector and applied for the graduate scheme after finishing my degree. The graduate scheme allowed me to experience a variety of different engineering roles within the company such as in power station operations, performance and commercial, maintenance shutdown support before settling down in my current role within the centre of engineering excellence team."
The life I live
"I am a dedicated mother of 2 young kids but when I can, I love to travel all over the world and see different cultures and beautiful places. I used to play netball and softball.I enjoy dancing and going out."
My typical day
"Typical day at work involves readings and replying to emails, project progress meetings, concentrated work on solving problems, talking to power station engineers in order to gather information which may help with solving the problems and of course coffee and lunch breaks. "
My qualifications
"A levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Masters in Mechanical Engineering with a sandwich year in industry. Graduate scheme at RWE. Chartered Engineers with IMechE."
