About Kat...
Who am I?
"I agree with my personality types of Developer, Manager, and Quality Controller. I really enjoy improving things and making them work better and learning new things. I love working as a team and empowering others to share their ideas, as well as being organised. I like to think I am good with detail and fair in the way I work, as well as challenging unsafe activities."
What do I do?
"At the moment I am an apprentice which means that I study at college 1 day a week and for the rest of the week I am in work. The work I do is placement based, which means I'll work in one area of the business for 6 months and then change to a different area. The work I do on each placement is usually for 1 particular project, but I can work on lots of different things within that project. The work can be anything from CAD work, researching solutions to a particular problem, or working out the best way of testing a system to make sure it's working as it should."
How did I get here?
"My route into my current role was a bit convoluted! I left school and went to university to study a degree in Design Technology for Music. However, despite getting a 1st, I was unable to find a job in the design field when I graduated. I found another job working at a guitar shop, left to explore the idea of running my own business and then worked for another company where I processed artwork and managed the operations team for a time. After about 10 years I decided I wanted to change career and I had always had a passing interest in electrics and how they worked, so I qualified to become a domestic electrician. When looking for a job I found a job working for an advertising company fixing their advertising systems, but while I was looking I also saw an advert for Electrical Design apprentices which tied in my degree and my latest training and I was fortunate enough to get the apprenticeship and the rest is history!"
The life I live
"I like to be active - I enjoy any exercise that involves dancing or jumping around to make me forget that I'm exercising! I love eating, and trying lots of different foods, and playing board games with friends - my favourite game is Pandemic although it's a little bit too realistic nowadays! I enjoy a good film or a lengthy box set, and my sofa is the kind that eats you so as soon as you sit down it's really hard to get back up again!"
My typical day
"I spend my day working at a computer, working on the project as part of my placement. I'm also Vice-Chair for the Cavendish Women's Network, so I'm often involved in events or meetings with them and managing their mailbox. I was recently elected as the Branch Secretary for Cavendish's recognised trade union Prospect, so I also get involved with any member issues and signposting that is needed. I'm also a STEM co-ordinator for our Bristol location at Cavendish, so I love getting involved in initiatives and schemes such as this!"
