Emma Farquharson
Graduate Process Engineer at BP
Summer placements really helped me gain an understanding of the energy industry and confirmed this was the career path I wanted to pursue.
About Emma...
Who am I?
"My personality types are Investigator, Manager and Controller. I think these results do match with me and the role I do.Investigator – Problem solving is a key part of what I do. I’m often faced with new problems and I need to be able to work to find the best solutions.Manager – I am team orientated. I enjoy working in a team to and find it useful to have discussions, taking into account people’s different perspectives.Quality controller – I like to keep people safe. Safety is the top priority in my role and we work every day to keep the people on our operating assets safe."
What do I do?
"I am a process engineering graduate working for bp, based in the North Sea region. In my role, I get to work on a wide variety of different tasks including calculations for sizing equipment, putting together registers, developing technical notes, trending operational data, completing risk analysis and providing support to operations or projects. It often involves working with different teams of people and using problem solving skills to get to the end result. In my first role with bp, I worked offshore and what I did was very much based on what was happening on the plant at the time – work scopes could emerge overnight with new problems to solve. The best part of offshore for me was when I worked on shift with technicians of the various disciplines – including production, mechanical & electrical. Through this I learnt so much about how the plant operated and how the equipment worked - it was an extremely valuable experience.I love the variety of what I do and how each day is never the same. It’s rewarding to be presented with and then go on to solve a very diverse range of problems. I also work with some really great people which makes it an enjoyable place to work."
How did I get here?
"When I was at school, I wasn’t sure what career path I wanted to follow but I really enjoyed maths and the other sciences, so when applying to university I looked for a degree that incorporated these and one which I thought could lead to a breadth of different career opportunities. I went to study Chemical Engineering at university which I really enjoyed. I managed to gain some industry experience over a couple of my summers whilst at university. One summer I worked in the Production Solutions department at Halliburton, and the second I had an internship at bp where I worked in the Process and Process Safety team. These placements really helped me gain an understanding of the energy industry and confirmed that this was the career path I really wanted to pursue. I started as a graduate in bp in September 2018."
The life I live
"I love music, whether that is listening to it or playing instruments. I often spend my spare time learning new tunes on the piano – I enjoy playing all sorts of different music from classical to Disney!"
My typical day
"The days can be so varied meaning there’s not really a typical day, which is what I love! I work on a wide variety of different tasks, as already described in the ‘what do I do?’ section. I will always have emails to respond to and meetings to attend about different things I am working on, as well as catch-ups with my team to see what other people are doing and to discuss if anyone needs support with anything. In between those, I sit down to get on with my specific work tasks. I spend a lot of my time on Excel, as well as using various specialist software for things like trending data or doing process modelling work."
My qualifications
"6 Highers: Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Maths, English, Music4 Advanced Highers: Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Applied MathsMaster’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Aberdeen."
