About Gemma...

Who am I?

"I am a motivated, driven, and enthusiastic individual who is in the early stages of my exciting career journey. I absolutely love a challenge and finding the bets solutions to overcome problems that arise. From the quiz I feel it has matched my 'personality types' well to my character. Being a developer is key to finding sustainable opportunities and environmentally friendly ways to overcome problems and better ways we work. You must be interested in the world around you and want to better it where you can, problem solving and inquisitive traits certainly help in this role. Being an influencer is critical to my role as a sustainability advisor because I must advice, but also try encourage and promote, adoption of sustainable practices to contractors and colleagues. Lastly, the 'personality type' of manager fits the role and what I do because it is important to be motivated and motivate others within the team also. You need to be open minded and willing to accept other peoples ideas and solutions. "

What do I do?

"As a Sustainability Advisor I focus on delivering social, environmental and economic benefits across the project. Working in the construction and civil engineering industry we engage early with the supply chain from the design stage through to construction to ensure opportunities to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste and energy and reduce carbon are identified, investigated and implemented. We encourage our supply chain to consider alternative technologies and collaborate with suppliers, designers and specialists to encourage new and innovative ways of working.  The team ensures that all works meet BREEAM Infrastructure “excellent” standards and that we comply with the principles of PAS2080 Carbon Management in Infrastructure certification. What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunities I have to make a tangible difference. Through encouraging sustainable practices I can make changes both big and small to positively impact the environment. I also enjoy working with a wide range of colleagues in different departments, from engineers and designers to community engagement officers and environmental advisors. Knowing I can make a difference is what makes the job enjoyable and satisfying. The starting salary for my role can range from £24,000-£28,000."

How did I get here?

"I always had an affinity for the environment and knew I wanted a career in something I am passionate about and wanted a sense of fulfillment from my career. To summarise my path to where I am now is a lot of studying (two degrees) and a lot of work experience (many to count) and taking any opportunities that arise. I was always interested in science and problem solving and took A-levels in Chemistry, Biology, Maths and English Literature. From here I completed a BSc in Environmental Sciences where I studied a range of modules from physical and chemical oceanography, soil sciences and xxxxxxxxx. During the three years I gained work experience in a local council environment department where I shadowed various teams for two weeks to understand how local councils deal with environmental issues such as waste. I also gained experience in a housing charity where I looked at contaminated land and soil reports for housing proposals. During my undergraduate degree I also worked seasonal periods for an acoustic consultancy, mainly at music festivals and events, dealing with noise compliance and pollution. In between my degree's I undertook a three month internship with BAM Nuttall (who I work for now) working as an Environmental Advisor on the Hull river flood defense scheme. All of my work experience and internships were so valuable in nudging me towards what I enjoyed and realising aspects I didn't enjoy as much. I returned to study a Masters degree in Environmental Assessment and Management which focused more on the application and management of environmental aspects. Following this I did a three month placement working as a Project Coordinator in an environmental consultancy before moving on to my current job as a Sustainability Advisor. "

The life I live

"I enjoy going for 'walks' out in my all-terrain wheelchair and being out in nature. I love to socialise and being surrounded by friends and family. I am passionate about disability advocacy and sharing awareness for rare and invisible illnesses. "

My typical day

"My typical day spends a lot of time at my desk with the occasional site visit. I will check in with my teams regularly and speak with my line manager when needed. Depending where we are in the month I may be collecting and analysis data relating to energy, waste, water and materials to build reports and understand where the project is doing well and could improve in places. Another aspect of my job is holding meetings or 'Sustainability Workshops' with subcontractors, design managers, and those involved in specific work packages (this is how we split things up) within the project. In these workshops I deliver presentations where I explain what sustainability is and how it relates to the projects targets. We then brainstorm ideas how we can implement more sustainable materials or methods of work mainly to reduce energy, water use and waste as well as seeking low carbon options. I also spend time researching sustainable materials and best practice for work. This is where a change can really be made and suggested to sites and is connected to the sustainability workshops. I find this part of my work really rewarding as we get to explore potential innovative solutions within construction.Other aspects of my role work closely with subcontractors to collect evidence for sustainability assessments such as BREEAM/CEEQUAL. The assessment sets out a criteria and we must provide evidence such as documentation or photographs of site to example these are being met. The assessment is scored and a sustainability rating is awarded to the project. I also get involved with progress meetings, and am part of two networks, WISE is one and another is a disability focus group so I can spend time in my day attending meetings for these or planning events and communications around this. I enjoy attending webinars on topical areas that aid understanding and best practice in my field of work and also complete online courses to aid continued professional development. "
