Research Associate at University of Sheffield
Working on engineering problems is a cool thing. You will see how a machine is running, how to make it operate better, all by your inputs.
About Juanjuan...
Who am I?
"Innovator: This is matching my working role as my work involves quite a lot of research, building new lab testing facilities, apply theories and apply to analyze techniques to simulate machinery parts, analyze their performance, work on how to make them work better. It is all about research, lots of ideas, teamwork. It has a lot of fun!Manager: I leading a group of postgraduates, undergraduates, and technicians to design experiments, build tools, try our ideas. People are working together efficiently and enjoyably.Quality controller: Research is obviously a serious thing. What we are doing needs to be RIGHT. But you know what, most often, I tried three solutions, only one is working. We call it EXPERIMENT. We are allowed to be wrong that what leads us to be RIGHT."
What do I do?
"Most of the time I am working in labs, doing experiments, analyzing data, improving experiments. I am also writing reports and papers for publication. My role will also involve liaising with collaborators, colleagues. "
How did I get here?
"When I was in school, I liked learning physics, chemistry, maths, and science, basically STEM subjects. In university, I got the chance to work in the lab, apply what I have learned to practical problems. For example, how the machine parts are designed, why they are in certain shapes/structures/sizes? What principles behind the scene? Curious has motivated me towards a career in engineering."
The life I live
"I like reading in my spare time. I have two lovely pet cats and two daughters, who use most of my spare time at the moment."
My typical day
"About half of my working days, i start working in the lab with experiments, data collection/analysis etc. Other half working days, i start a day in the office, writing reports, papers, communicating with other researchers etc. My career ambition is to lead a team, work on the understanding of machine elements, and therefore providing the industry with advanced knowledge and techniques."
My qualifications
"I completed my undergraduate, postgraduate in China. I did my PhD in England. I am a Charted Engineer accredited by IMechE. I just completed a postgraduate degree in higher education. I am also an AFHEA from Higher Education Institute. "
