About Sarah...

Who am I?

"I used to be a Biology teacher, so really life to learn, and explain how things work. This also expands to how I can often see where problems are, and I like to try and make things better, it doesn't always work, but the effort is always there! I prefer to work on my own, I am quite an introvert, and often feel quite uncomfortable if I need to speak in front of a crowd (very different to when I was a teacher!). I like to research too, it gives me the best chance of understanding how something works, and therefore being able to solve where or when something is going wrong."

What do I do?

"I am a Civil Servant, working at Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), part of the Ministry of Defence, I am a Customer Engagement Manager working with Head Office, looking to understand reporting across the organisation, and often working with lots of data to create visuals that MOD will understand. DIO helps to maintain most of the property of the MOD estate (MOD land equates to around 1% of the UK), so my role can be quite varied in the types of reporting I get involved in. I think this is what I enjoy most about my role, it's variety. No day is the same, I work a lot with data, so have to use excel on a daily basis, and get to tell a story to managers with that information, so that they can make important decisions. I started off at DIO on £25,000, there are lots of opportunity for promotion and experiencing new careers within DIO."

How did I get here?

"I left teaching 3 years ago, wondering what my next job challenge should be. I kind of really liked data, seeing that it can tell so much about how an organisation working, so I applied for a Data Analyst job at DIO. It really helped me to understand how DIO worked, and I was lucky enough to be promoted into the role I'm in now. When I walked away from teaching, I was really stuck. I wondered if I had made a mistake, but I wanted to be successful, and to show my children that careers can change, even later on in life, and you will still be ok. I now know I didn't make a mistake. Working in my role has allowed me to enhance so many skills I never used to have, and I look forward to my next challenges!"

The life I live

"I am studying part time for a MSc in Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology! I absolutely love it, especially learning about the skeleton, and what stories a bone can tell you about the person when they were alive!"

My typical day

"My days are always different. I get lots of emails, so can spend quite a bit of the day replying to them. I have been working on a project looking at the historically listed buildings belonging to MOD, and that involves lots of data, so much of my day can be looking at spreadsheets and to write a report on what that information is telling me. I also do quite a lot of STEM work in DIO, promoting STEM and helping DIO to move forwards with STEM."

My qualifications

"Access course in Health ScienceBSc (Hons) Forensic ScienceCurrently studying for a MSc in Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology"
