About Beth...

Who am I?

"The 'manager' personality type, is definitely something that I think fits with me and fits with the job role that I have. I really enjoy working as part of a team, and working together to one goal. I think I quite organised, and leading a small team in my job is something that has helped me improve this a lot, along with encouraging discussions and making sure everyone in the team is part of the discussions to find the best solution together. This is also why I feel the communicator personality type fits me quite well as I am a good listener. A large part of my job also involves taking technical and quite complex information, and communicating this in a clear way that everyone can understand. It is also important that my work pays attention to detail to ensure all the information is correct, and most importantly all the end users are kept safe in a situation that could be quite dangerous if done incorrectly. Therefore quality management is also a very important part of my role, and definitely involves skills that I have worked on a lot since beginning my job, and hence working towards this being a personality type. "

What do I do?

"My role is to deliver the documentation for the construction of a number of large offshore wind farms, and I have been lucky enough to work on projects in Asia, Europe and the UK. The instructions that I create are used directly by the technicians on site, and so one thing that I love about my role is that I have a direct effect on the success of the project and can see the end product that is created. One of my main motivations in my work is being able to see the end product, and so having the opportunity to travel to some amazing places, and watch my instructions being used to create the offshore wind turbines, was really amazing and gave me an additional layer of understanding! I also enjoy being able to interact with lots of different people, including project managers, design engineers and technicians, all who have lots of experience and can teach me so many different things that will help me moving forward in my career. Although money isn't the most important reason for choosing a specific career or job, it is definitely important to know. The salary for my job, when converted into GBP works out at around £50,000 which is about average for an engineering job here in Denmark."

How did I get here?

"Before University I found out about the possibility of doing an engineering degree through discussions with my careers advisor at school as I enjoyed maths and physics at school. I then did a little work experience at some local engineering companies before going to University, which really made clear to me that Engineering was the route that I wanted to go down. Throughout my degree at University I spent two summers working at an automation engineering firm, which gave me a lot of knowledge as to what working life is like, and what the industry is like as a whole. At University, I found a passion for working in renewable energy, as this is something that I really care about and also find really interesting. I applied for a lot of jobs and graduate schemes and also found the application process quite different, definitely learning a lot along the way. In the end, after a couple of options, this seemed like the perfect role for me, as it not only gave me the chance to move abroad, but also working for a large international company appealed to me to give me lots of development opportunities, to interact with lots of different people and learn lots of skills. Moreover, with offshore wind being a constantly developing industry, the technologies used are only getting more interesting to learn about, and to be a part of that, and work with some of the best people in the industry, is something I found really inspiring!"

The life I live

"The job role that I had, gave me the opportunity to move to Denmark! This was a really exciting move, giving me the opportunity to work abroad straight out of University, and the move was made really easy with lots of help from the company. I enjoy spending time with my friends, who come from all over Europe, so I get to learn lots about different cultures, which is a bonus of working for a large international company. I also loved playing netball whilst I lived in the UK, but unfortunately there are no teams here in Denmark, so instead I have started playing basketball with a local team, which has been a great way to learn more of the language, along with having Danish lessons every week! "

My typical day

"As my job involves a lot of coordinating between different people in the engineering department, a large proportion of my day is spent replying to emails and attending or running meetings. I also spend my time, taking the technical information given to me by the engineers and designers, and translating this into instructions that can be read by the technicians building the turbines. I love interacting with a wide range of people, with lots of different experiences as this means I am constantly learning new things! As different projects are in different stages of the process, and I work on lots of different projects, my days can vary a lot. For projects early on in the process , the days are mainly office based and in meetings, whereas once the wind farms are under construction, I have the opportunity to spend some time on site, actually seeing my instructions being used to install the wind farm, which is really exciting!
